a mate of mine was changing his temperature sensor and he did it with the ignition on (by mistake) so he disconected sensor changed sensor plugged it back in. he went to start his car but the starter wont crank over
is it possible that he has blown his ignition?

That`s a new one on me,more likely that he`s knocked an earth wire.

As Stevo67 says it is probably a earth problem.

That's easy to test thou, with a multimeter measure between earth and the wire to the starter motor solenoid (the thin one) and try to crank engine, you should get around battery voltage when in crank position, but if earth problem you will get in voltmeter like 3 to 7 volts, if not power going to starter motor (broken wire, ignition) then you wont get nothing (0volts)
