just gettin my vtr converted guys and want to know the best gearbox for the vts i know this has been covered i just wasnt to double cheak
cheers!
Which gear box suited for vts?
-
#1
-
#2either 1.1 box or vts/gti box or if you got some cash a BE ox conversion
-
#4so just stick with the vts one? just iv heard if i stick with my vtr box or smaller it will make it much faster to say "70" but shit top end?
-
#6S1 Rallye is the best from what I've heard, just very expensive.
-
#7The S1 isnt always the best.
-
#8define best
what you using the car for?
Si -
#91.4 XSI box. one of the best all rounders.
-
#10I have used all three of the above mentioned and i can honestly say this:
S1 Rallye box was quick through the gears and felt rapid but i got my ass handed to me everytime unless it was second gear out of a roundabout - after that your dead meat. from a standing start its wheelspin through first and second then flat out at around 115 unless you want to sit at 7800rpm for the next ten miles - you will always back off.
1.1 box was a great all rounder, the kick at 4k was even more pronounced as it "came on cam" and i was able to sit at 70mph without revving the nackers off it. it felt quick through the gears and had enough length in the gears off the line to keep traction.
The VTS box in comaprison felt slow, i dont know why but it did, and when i sold the car the kid that bought it said "jesus this car is fast". Well it was, but not as quick as the 1.1 box that was on it...
1.1 for me all day long. however, i will admit, that the 1.1 box started to get a little noisy but maybe thats because i loved driving it quick with that box.
not only that i changed the box in one afternoon without taking the engine out and I sold a different 1.1 box for £40 as that was the going rate. If i could go back in time i'd have sold the others and kept it..1 user thanked this post: -
#11Not sure if you went into detail with the last bit on purpose? You dont have to take the engine out to change the gearbox and it takes an afternoon to change one, so nothing abnormal there?Quote:I have used all three of the above mentioned and i can honestly say this:

#121.1 box has essentially the same diff as an 1.4 XSi... just a crappy off cam cluster.
Xsi box is a great combo, but far from perfect. -
#13the 1.1 box is known to have a weaker diff so if reliability is an issue (and it may well be) it might be worth knowing how long it takes to change one.Quote:Not sure if you went into detail with the last bit on purpose? My level of detail was clearly too much for you.
-
#14S1 rallye box gets my vote, I love mine.
-
#15Its weaker but will be ok as long as u dont launch and wheelspin.
-
#16Over a year of heavy driving and its the usual input shaft noise on my 1.1 box. The accelleration is nice, does top at 115, but i get my arse handed to me unless im revving the knackers off :/Quote:the 1.1 box is known to have a weaker diff so if reliability is an issue (and it may well be) it might be worth knowing how long it takes to change one.

Vtr btw -
#17think i a will stick to vts :/ cheers anyways guys
-
#19stick with the vts a think guys
-
#20been thinking about fitting a vtr box to my vts to get a little better mpg out the bugger,
-
#21Just have the 5th gear swapped.
-
#22Theres two different VTR boxes, the older one is the one thats in the sticky in this section.
The common one is the one that shares the same gear cluster as the other sports boxes, the ratio's for this are in the articles section, although I cant see that as im not premium so might not be, but pretty sure it is!
Therefore depending on which vtr box you have you might be replacing 5th gear with the same gear lol -
#23VTR 5th is a 0.787 ratio
VTS 5th is a 0.854 ratio dude.
VTR's don't have the sports cluster. -
#25I've got the vts box on my vtr. Made quite a difference. top speed is around 120mph but pulls nicely. When you combine a lower engine mount it feels great.
Id like to try a vtr with a 1.1 box just to try the difference. Why does a 1.1 box have a weaker diff? -
#26Because its for 1.1 engines.
-
#29I'm suprised to hear that, I really didn't like that 1.1 box od my VTS 1.6 16v. First gear was to short, big wheelspin there, and when I shift to second, rpm drops too much, so acceleration is not good. In acceleration 0 - 100 kp/h, 1.1 box was slower about 1,5 seconds than standard box. And above that, acceleration was not so good as with standard VTS gearbox. Now I have S2 Rallye gearbox - final ratio 4.06 (VTS standard 3,95), other gears are same. It's ok gearbox, not big difference, but standard VTS box was best for accelerations from standstill. Hope so I will find S1 Rallye box one day, I have big wish to try it on my Saxo. Not for better accelerations, but for pure driving funQuote:1.1 box was a great all rounder, the kick at 4k was even more pronounced as it "came on cam" and i was able to sit at 70mph without revving the nackers off it. it felt quick through the gears and had enough length in the gears off the line to keep traction.
