325mm Hi-spec discs and 4pot calipers (pics)

  1. #1
After overcoming a number of problems, my new front discs and calipers are almost ready to rock!!

The brake hoses need to be replaced with longer items but the hoses supplied wont bolt into the threaded nipple properly. I will buy a couple of male to female sockets tomorrow to sort this hopefully!

The Hi-spec instructions were a bit sketchy. For anyone who has fitted these before, does the positioning of the pads/bars/clips/springs, etc look right? It seemed the only logical way to put them together

    Here's some pics.

close up almost does justice to how thick the disc is
  3. #3

  12. #12
them are stunning simo! top job
  13. #13
sexual simo i would love some
  14. #14
Im glad you like them peeps

Both sides are now almost complete. TOnights progress was hampered as I had to remove and replace the passengers side strut/wheel hub.

The SST grindings from way back when were just too close to the wire to live with with the larger brakes!! Can you spot the difference?

Feels like the bearing in the new wheel hub is knackered too as plenty of play Will get the brakes on for now though and see how it feels

Brake lines and hoses now sorted too.

Should be finished by tomorrow and I'll need a volunteer to help press the brake pedal whilst I bleed the system

  15. #15
should be able to call round for a cuppa and a press of the brake pedal.

I shall speak to you tomorrow.

The brakes looks awsome on the car!

    Mike
  16. #16
    Shit the bed!!!!!!!!!!!

I got to get me some of them
  17. #17
Both discs and calipers are now on the car...

The brake lines I had made up were made with identical fittings... BUT... after having to chop the passenger side brake pipe off the car its fitted with a larger threaded nut, in the ABS block!

Bloody typical!! I guess Citroen did this so you couldnt confuse left and right lines or something?

Anyway... it means I have to have my brake pipe modified tomorrow, so I can fit the brake line and new flexy hose, then I'm all ready for bleeding them!
  18. #18
    very nice mate!
  19. #19
hey simo what did they cost ya, and where can i order myself a set from??
  20. #20
    Speak to Garreth at http://www.gsmotorsport.com

All prices are available on his website... and Im sure Garreth will do you a great deal if you let him know you're from Saxperience.
  21. #21
    ok cheers simo
  22. #22
All brakes are now on and the brake system has been bled.

The wheels are back on,. but it looks like the hoses will scrub on the wheels when on hard lock. SO before going out on the road I'll have to come up witha solution to lash then back.

Fingers crossed.. the brakes will be tested on the road tomorrow afternoon.
  23. #23
keep an eye on your brake lines.
many people wiith the hi spec kits have had rubbing probs due to the angle at which the line comes out of the caliper, and the hoses hi spec supply being to long in the past, a few have had the lines rub through and hence casuse failure.

to big instances were fmp and berkshire vtr on ssc..

you bastard btw ive only got 283mm 2 piece disks
  24. #24
o yes dont tie the line to the strut as some ppl have done as this will rub through, with enough work you can change the angle of them to just avoid scrubbing.

did your lines have a plastic coating or just the metal??
  25. #25
My braided hoses have a clear plastic coating on them.

Im going to havce a look under the car in about 20 mins and sort something out.

I'll probably angle the hose coming out of the caliper lower down and put a securing strap on the strut... but with enough slack so that the hose can still slide.

Other ideas are more than welcome
  26. #26
simo! even if its loose and the hose slides it can still wear...
as it will be moving and so can rub..

maybe wrapping that area of the hose with something as extra protection may be a good idea... or having some foam wrapped around the strap to make sure its smooth.

if you get it right you shoudnt need to do that tho as you can get it just right with a little bit of fiddly pokey!
  27. #27
The passenger side is fine and does not go anywhere near...

Ive angled the driver side away and tht clears, but the hose is too long where it is currently secured. I may well move the copper pipe down lower so the flexy pipe is further angled away. I have a tie-wrap pulling it away just now... this will have to be removed and the pipe secured properly.

This was good enough for my 13miles test run though!

The first thing I noticed was a very spongey pedal... maybe residual air has settled and needs to be bled again. Or maybe this is how the pedal feels with the larger pistons...

Either way I will bleed them again tomorrow.

The brakes work VERY WELL though!

After making sure they worked and bedding them in for 10 miles or so, I told myself I would brake hard at the next roundabout... I put my hand on my laptop (on passenger seat) to make sure if didnt go flying... and before I could press the brakes hard, I was already locked up and skidding. LOL!

Appears to be braking harder on one side currently too, so probably a bleeding issue.

    More news tomorrow afternoon.

    Quick pic...

steady there stay on topic lmao, sorry just being dirty minded

they look class mate, must be some power in them things!!!
  29. #29
lol ive only got 283s but i know how easy they are to lock up. you will find with them you need to be more progressive with them rather than just banging them on, have you also adjusted the brake proportioning valve??

id say simo your hoses are to long as you can get 2 sizes, you probably need the shorter hose which will prevent rubbing, either that or measure the size you need ring hi spec and get them to make you a set to the size they need.

once the pads are bed in well they do get better and im only using the halfrauds std volvo pads, (due to the fact they bite reasonably well from cold)

    enjoy them dude

what model volvo they from mate??
  31. #31
volvo 240 i believe. theyre halfrauds specials.
  32. #32
ring hi spec to check the pad fitment, but im 99% sure thats the shape and size
  33. #33
nice one mate.. thats something to remember for future reference...
  34. #34
they cost about £14 and have taken alot of abuse, i was outbraking most at fcs with them, and didnt notice any probs during the session, theyre good in winter due to low temp bite.

however others are better, these are good allround.
  35. #35
yeah.. i was just thinking that "standard car" pads that fit would work better than the "performance car" pads during the winter months...
  36. #36
    indeed.
  37. #37
Not usre if I said or not, but I ended up using the standard hose brackets to hold the hoses secure.

I intend to replace the brake pipes again as the proper hoses have now arrived from Citroen. They are bent to the correct shape, etc and look a little neater. THey only cost £8 for the pair too

At some point I will probably replace the flexy hoses too, as although they are now secured away from the wheels, its always at the back of my mind.

Done about 400 miles with them now and about 60 miles on track.

    Brakes are fantastic!!
  38. #38
simo are you not finding them to powerful.
  39. #39
No, not too powerful... They just brake really solidly. You tend to brake lighter in traffic, etc otherwise you end up pushing your nose agsinst the windscreen

On the track braking from high speeds they were fantastic.
  40. #40
you get used to driving with 4 pots fast, theyre not powerful if you use a progressive pedal movment as then you just get what you need... altho whacking em on full at 80ish things get quite interesting lol
  41. #41
    They look so nice!!!
  42. #42
quality i mentioned 4 pots to another mate the other night and again hes said similar of them being to much power because the cars so light (he runs pug 180) but a lot seem to run them. and then fastworld saying about locking up i just wanna buy whats right when i come to them.
  43. #43
they only lock up oin my vtr because i have no pas, so same as any brakes with it the harder you hit em they will lock. Ive got a track car and a road car, i bought the 4 pots for my track car but instead am using em on road car, theyre staying there, so i need more sets now for the track car. I would seriously recommend the hi specs, you jus tneed to learn how to ue=se them, you dont have to slam brakes on for a change.
  44. #44
cheers, thats good to hear. hopefully go for these over the similar willwoods. any more to choose from? are you going hispecs on your track car?
  45. #45
They are looking very good, are you painting the rear calipers gold to match? Keep them clean!
  46. #46
    Painting calipers is gay!!!! LMFAO!!!

i may go hi spec on my track car, it depends if i can get them made in a small enough fit met to fit under the wheels i intend to run, ill go gti brakes atm as theyre 266 mm, but if i dont rate them ill hunt around for what i need in 4 pot fitment. There are many companies to use, just hi spec are cheap, andd local to me, and also have better pad fitment than some such as compbrake.
  47. #47
i was gonna go compbrake but the lack of dust seals put me off. good for you though if its gonna be just for track. as they 14inch kit
  48. #48
    urgles a bit ....... nice !
  49. #49
the lack of dust seals is the prob with compbrake and some willwoods, thats why id also recommend the hi spec, they come with the dust seals and are less maintanance. I may get customs made up as im not hppy with what comprke have to offer to be honest.
  50. #50
looks like them then. why the decision to run 14s? any advantages?
  51. #51
who said 14s may run different wheels. altho rallye steelies are lighter and cheaper than alloys, plus can have more sets with diff tyres on
  52. #52
ahh got you. billvts jobbie then
  53. #53
Great setup you got the simo, lets hope you have no probs with these!!
  54. #54
I've come in my pants!... funny how going faster id highly arousing but big brakes and better stopping power is just pornographic lol!
