HELP with my drum

  1. #1
    Hi everyone,

Just got back from work and as I set off i noticed a 'jangling' sound coming from the rear of the car. I stopped twice enroute to check what it was but couldnt see anything, anyway now that im back i jacked up the car and checked the wheels.. giving them a nice rotate, and the rear left wheel makes this jangly sound in the drum. I dont know what it is and i dont have the tools to open up the drum (all my kit is at home!) and find out what it is.

Problem is, I have to do 200miles between now and getting home (on friday), I'm worried that this jangly object might jamn into something and cause an nice horrendous mess of my rear drum.

I have a dealer warranty from a place in North Yorkshire, but im not sure if that applies to work being carried out at other dealerships (in the midlands)

    any ideas?!?!

    Please help :upset: :upset: :upset:

I assume the handbrake cable looks ok?

Other than that it is probably a spring like jason says, or the brake lining could have split from the actual shoe as thats not uncommon. DOnt worry about driving it mate, chances are you'll need to replace everything in the anyway lol. In the most unlikely case u myt pop the seals on the piston and lose some brake fluid but that is highly unlikely and u have a spilit brake system anyway. Just drive home and take it easy mate!

Sounds like the thingy insides broken, I know somebody whos was jangaling and he was doing 60 down a country road, and the jangly thing broke off into more pieces which got jammed and the whole rear end just stopped, basicaly like putting your handbrake on at 60 and it spun but he didn't leave the road or hit anything. But had to be towed away as it needed the drum replacing before it could be driven again.

    Blah.

There is always a chance when u drive it like that.. As the spring, or watever is broken off could jam between the shoes and the drum.. I would drive it cos im just like that.. lol.. But it up to you play it safe if ya like..

Hey people thanks for the advice its much appreciated...

If a shoe needs replacing then I'll have to the entire rear set...
    Hummm, f**k.

How much is it going to cost do you think?

    thanks everyone

    just a little update people...

I managed to drive to Naffallerton without the drum exploding or locking up, which is nice. dannys little post about a friend's car going kaboom at 60mph shat me up a little so I decided to drive at 50 to be on the safe side

I'm taking the beast into a garage tomorrow to be looked at :
I'll let you know what they find so that this thread is useful for other people.

    peace

Will be the shoe spring, if theres no other damage then it should be fine to just either reatach the spring or get a new one... but shoes aint too expensive iirc

Cheers man, I can now sound knowledgable when Im describing the problem

It's the labour that'll be a sod, and its not the sort of thing i'm too familar with, i dont mind doing most of the work myself but brakes are a pretty safety critical area therefore I'm going to leave to the pro's

this is making me consider going discs at the rear

When I had my drums apart I can say that its easier than it looks lol... there are 2 springs a short one that holds the top of the shoe together and keeps it on the cylinder and a longer bottom one which prevents the trailing shoe from going astray.... other than that and the two shoes themselves theres only the handbrake mech on the trailing shoe and a ratchety lever that stops the upper shoe closing too far.... I forgot to reset this once and the car was like driving with handbrake on lol as the shoe was too close to the drum
