    How easy is it to remove / fit a rear axle? How long would it take?

    It's easy enough if you can follow a guide and have the correct tools and space

    Only four bolts hold the axle to the car itself, it's the brake parts which take the longest to remove.

    If you have never done it before, I wouldn't attempt it on your own.

    Get a mate and follow a guide or find someone who has done it before and help out

    IIRC, to get it off, there are just 4 bolts you need to undo. 2 in the boot area, 2 under the seats. Undo the brake pipes from the axle using spanners. Then the axle should just lower down. Leave your wheels on the axle though as it'll be easier to roll it out of the way.
    As for the handbrake cable need to undo exhaust heatshield from under the car so its loose and then undo the cables.

    The garage I go to, I get a bit of a discount, so.....

    How much are axles going for nowadays?

    Be careful when buying a second hand axle.

    My axle went, replaced it with a second hand one, totally unaware it had the same problem

    Ended up buying a reconditioned one from IM axles.

    May aswell do it yourself, its so easy.

    most time consuming part is brakes, and re-bleeding them after.

    You could do it in under an hour but I reckon a garage would charge for 2 hours labour so maybe £80-£100

    Pretty sure you can leave the brakes connected if you remove the calipers from the trailing arms and place them out the way?

    the lines are attatched to the axle with clips, i took it all off when i did mine, would imagine it being a ballache trying to remove the axle with calipers and lines everywhere.

    I really wouldnt buy a second hand one mike!

    yorkie got through 15 second hand ones that didnt last long or were fucked once on the road that couldnt be judged off the car. £100 per axle x 15 lol

    He ended up getting a refurb'd IM Axles one.

    Also if you fit a second hand one, then pay £100 labour, then you have to pay £100 labour and another £100 for another one if that ones fucked or dosent last a few weeks!

    I agree with this tbh.

    Even if you do find a second hand axle which seems ok, you still don't know how long it'll last. Even if it's from a low millage car, you dont know how it's been treated.

    It all comes down to money at the end of the day. And how long your planning on keeping the car

    Up to you if you want to risk it or not!

    £365 for a Refurb with warrenty + £100 fitting

    or

    £100 second hand axle + £100 fitting + £100 for another axle + another £100 for removal and refitting = £400, its only got to happen once and you have paid the same as IM Axles.

    Id rather have the peace of mind with a refurb, can also pass the recipt onto the new owner next year with its warrenty!

    I got a beam for £80 with uprated mounts etc, fitted it with a mate.. took about 3 hours, as had to mess about lining brake lines up.

    Done mine over two days!! due to waiting for citreon to get parts out to me normaly takes one full day to swop over......

    Hi all,

    I'm looking to sort the rear axle for my X reg VTS. I would prefer to get a recon one so that it will actually last a reasonable amount of time as I do 30 miles a day so don't want to fit one axle that's rubbish then have to pay out again for another one. Does anyone have any recommendations of places to buy one/get one fitted?
