  4. #4
    Mobil super 2000 10/40...saxi vtr

drained all oil replace oil filter, filled up with oil till on max, started engine and refilled to max again :-\
  5. #5
whats the oil level like now?
  6. #6
paper element type filter i guess? if so, was it a recognised brand as they have caused a lot of trouble in the past by restricting oil flow, not so much on saxos but certainly on c2/c3's

Well mandy said oil filter could be stoppjing oil flow....so its all there still

How long did your oil light take to go out? A lad I worked with bought a classic cavalier 130 mk2 (was a classic to him anyway) he dropped the oil and filter, fitted new filter and filled the oil up, started it up and after a roadtest came back knocking its tits off.
Dropped the sump off and the big ends were toast.
The old thick crap oil was keeping it quiet.

Has yours been well serviced? I had a 406 diesel that was like that, used to tap its nuts off the top end when the oil was changed. Needed new followers but it settled down after good run then it would be fine until serviced again.
  24. #24
Just checked oil....its up to max:-\ any help
  25. #25
Oil light went out within a few seconds mate
  26. #26
Also been driving around all day no problem its just started tonight
  27. #27
tapping is just a sign the engine is working well. if it starts knocking too you know you're onto a winner
  28. #28
    Hmmmmm

    Upload a video if possible.

if it was mine I'd drive it home and pull the filter out, refit the housing and see if it sounds any different. But if there was going to have been any damage it may already have done it. They are quite a rattly engine.

Or the other thing I'd do would be to kick its arse all the way home and see if it gets any louder.
I've had rovers do this, my mate work for a rover dealer and said they put engine flush in them and take them for a good spanking. After about a mile it threw a rod out the block lol!
Kill or cure that's what I say!

Well its not doing all the time, if i move my steering wheel it seems to go away :-\....had a new wishbone and rear caliper and handbrake cable put on last week maybe its something to dowith that....but there has been no rattleall week
  32. #32
Its so difficult to diagnose a noise on a forum. Does it tap when your stood still at idle, or is it when its under load at a certain rpm.

And your sure it didn't do this before you changed the oil?

I`d agree with Mandyslover70 its your oil filter restricting the oil flow,so you`ve got low oil pressure which is why the engine is rattling.
  34. #34
Noise is at idle.....if its the oil filter what shall i do? and if its low presure will something on my dash come up

You drain out the oil into a bucket & fit a quality oil filter then top the oil up.
  37. #37
Im going to hatve a proper look in the morning, hopefully just something loose :-\

    what else
  38. #38
It sounds like it coming from the driverside arch not the actual engine :-\

    any ideas

  41. #41
Post up a vid... only takes few minutes to do
  42. #42
Its not actually doing it all the time...and when it does if i move my steering wheel or go forward slightly it goes away :-\
  43. #43

Pop the carpet up & see if the wishbone nuts have been done up tightly.
  45. #45
Good idea, i only said engine as i have had the work done for over a week now and all been well but the second i have changed oil something started rattling
  46. #46
have you left anything under the bonnet when you done the oil change and its still rolling around in the scuttle area or on the inner wing?
  47. #47
no i did actually check for that! thanks for the help anyway
  48. #48
Could be the alternator belt slipping, or something along those lines?
  49. #49
Doesn't sound like the engine then, just something loose that's knockign when you have the idle vibration, pull the arch liner back and check for ANY loose bolts etc, my exhaust used to rattle on the back bumper and i had no idea what it was until i walked aroudn the car while it was on and heard it simple things sometimes!
  50. #50
going to have to jack it up tomorrow and see whats what i guess......hopefully just a loose bolt/trim
  51. #51
Give everything a good check over, it could just be that with the new oil you're engines running a bit better so you might have some new noises coming from certain places from vibrations etc. But like MandysLover's said it could be the oil filter, id change it for a better quality one just for peace of mind, they're not too expensive.
  52. #52
A failed upper engine mount on the drivers side of the car can sometimes cause some weird nosies too.
  53. #53
how much to replace the mount (if it is that)
  54. #54
Right took it back to the garage and they said because the wishbone has been replaced i need to have the tracking done, this is causing the noise :-\ sound right
  55. #55
mmmm are they Red Indians at this garage, is their leader call Big Chief Talking Bollocks??? Never known tracking to cause a rattling noise, perchance porkies are being spoken
  56. #56
Well now i have this new wishbone....i have to turn the wheel slightly to go in a stright line if you get me so im guessing the tracking needs doing now.....but they have looked proper and said something in the arch is loose and rattling around :-\ never going back to this garage again

So why did you use them again? Should have just gone somewhere else mate and they'd have diagnosed it and fixed it properly.
