engine using oil

   Got my new dipstick finally as my other one snapped, sine my car last had an oil change about 5000 miles ago the oil only goes half way up the measuring stick so only got half the oil in i had when it was changed 5000 miles ago, will this be my car burning oil? never noticed blue smoke or anything :| will top up in the morning when the engine is cold and got mot on wednesday so haveing a service.

   Also when i last had a service i dont know what brand of oil they used if i top it up will using a diffrent brand ie fully synthetic oil to top up with whats in the engine currently cause any damage if they were diffrent?

   Shouldnt do but i would do a full oil and filter change..

   You will probably find the garage filled the oil up to just above the minimum level.
   
   Do a full filter and oil change yourself as mentioned above and monitor it.
   
   If you haven't noticed a leak or it the tell tale signs of it burning oil then I would not be that worried.

   im getting a full service tomorro along with my MOT i just want to top it up until then synthetic oil will be alrite as its all i got?
