Important! : squeaking belt when idle?

  1. #1
Had my S engine dropped in a couple of days ago and now whenver it idles i'll get an occasional squeak. It's very short but sounds like a slipping belt? engine had the cambelt changed when it was out and i'm hoping it's not that..

Also there seems to be a little bit of oil on the front of the engine block? wondered what that could be from too as it seems to be quite moist and i'd only just started the car up since about 4pm today (8 hours.)

Okay just went out and had a look and im almost certain its from the belts. Also found out when im sitting still and i press the accelerator quickly or sharply to rev it, it also squeaks for a second then?

try running it with the alternator belt off to eliminate that?

L give it a try tomorrow, at work now but it definitely sounds like a belt or something in that area

ive had the same problem and just for a quick fix i ran the car and with a peice of choke just run it on edge of belt.. it stopped mine lol

Ah fair enough. Didn't get a chance to spray grease on the belt today but ill see if i get a chance tomorrow and see if it helps?

violin rosin is good to use too but you want to tension the belt properly.

It's common after a new belt has gone on or when a belt has been removed and then replaced. It basically 'beds' itself in a touch which means it loosens slightly.

The other thing that can cause the squeak is either they haven`t replaced the cambelt tensioner or it`s over tentioned.
  12. #12
So judghing from what some people are saying i should check the tension of the alt belt and see if it's too slack?
  13. #13
Pretty much. Cambelt tensioner is the next one to check failing that - Ive had one seize up on me and the noise was awful but constant.
  14. #14
Well its not constant, its frequent but literally only does a quick squeak and thats it. Wouldnt know how to check a tensioner to save my life, im just gonna feel for a lot of play on the belt

tensioner on cam belt is a brand new SKF one fitted last Thursday

Eah i didn't think it would be cambelt related but im gonna play with the alternator belt tomorrow and check for slack etc just to check

yeah we put engine in on saturday, cam belt and tensioners are new, think it'll just be alternator belt squeaking tbh

Karl if its the Alternator belt, pop it over to me, if its a cambelt noise, pop it over to Jason
