Important! : Rear lights problem! Help. SOLVED!

Basicaly. my tail lights are going nuts.

when i turn the lights on the tail lights both work fine.

when i brake only the high level brake light and drivers side brake light come on.

ive replaced all the bulbs including indicator and reverse bulbs.

when the tail lights are on and i indicate right its fine, but when i indicate left the left hand brake light and indicator flash alternitavely.

and when its in reverse and i put the hazards on or indicate left both reversing lights flash along with the left hand brake light.

now, recently i have stripped the rear of the car, and disconected the wiper motor and boot light, but surely this couldnt effect anything?

also ive removed the 6x9's and the cables to the head unit, could i of done something when pulling these out?

if it was a fuse surely the lights wouldnt work at all?

the only earth i diconected when stripping was the one in the boot by the interior light but i put that back on and its still the same.
im guessing its an earthing problem but dont know where they are or which one it could be?

any help is much appreciated, its doing my head in now!

    thanks,

    rick.

Sounds weird, are they standard lights.
  3. #3
    yeah standard but mk1's.

    they used to work fine.

its since i stripped the rear out.

its something ive done, or damaged in the process.

can anyone tell me where all the earths are that would effect the rear lights?

2 earthing points mate,1 each side where you lift the tailgate up,I reckon you`ve disturbed them.

theres an earth point on the left hand side near where the rear seat belt goes, the bolt is up tight and earth spades are clean.

i didnt see one on the other side mate? is it in the same place?

    thanks for that steve mate.

im pretty sure there isnt one there on mine, maybe different on different models?

    i will investigate tomorrow.

are there any other earths inside the car i could of disturbed? like under the dash or carpet or anything?

Check the bulb holders for corrosion.

Either way, it's a bad earth.

bulb holders are both nice and clean mate, one thing i made sure when i replaced all the bulbs.

which means it has to be a dodgy earth somewhere on the car?

im guna clean the garage out tomorrow and get the car in out the wind and rain and have a proper look over everything, its really bugging me now.

has one of your duel filiments gone in ure bulb, mine were going hectic too when i replaced with single filiment bulb?? just putting feelers out
  12. #12
no ive replaced all the bulbs mate. all the right bulbs in the right way round etc.

checked earths in the rear of the car, all look fine to me and nice and clean.

    anything else i should check?
  14. #14
Check the high level brake light in the tailgate,as sometimes(did on mine)the circuit board holding the bulbs can crack causing lights problems.

ive replaced all rear bulbs, cleaned holders, checked earths in the rear of the car and still no change, still going mental.

which only means it has to be something behind the dash as this is the only other place i have been playing.

going to have a proper look at the fuse box area tomorrow in the light see whats what.

this is seriously pissing me off now.

found the problem, was entirely my stupid fault.

when i stripped the rear, i removed the interior light and the switch, but didnt reconect the earth, so i had an earth conected to the chasis but when i pulled all the tape back off the loom it didnt lead to anything

so i pulled the tape off all the way to the light cluster and found an earth wire coming from the light leading no where, so i just connected the two ends together and hey presto!

only thing is, my central locking wont work even on the key and the stereo wont come on.

    any ideas what this is?

also when i turn the ignition off the fuel gauge stays up where it was

check your fuses (all of them) including the one on back of stereo
