please help

   my alternator recently went and i have got a new one from a motor factors, everything fitted grand but the battery light is still on, with no power steering, i read this is run off the alternator. i have tested the battery and when the car is running it remains at 12v and doesnt rise like it should. I then tested the main terminal on the alternator and its only putting out 1.2 volts................am no expert but would you say i have been sold a faulty alternator.....? am guessing it should be putting out at least 12....?
   
   please help as am now stuck without a car over christmas...

   did ya have the red on the alt pos and the black on the battery earth mate

   yeah, i tryed it with the lead connected to the alt, which gave me 12v, then i removed the lead and took a reading again and the alt was only putting out a low voltage.
   
   any ideas, am still thinking the alt is dodgey

   try putting the earth on the engine block mate

   is the belt sat correctly ?

   thanks people il try putting the earth directly on the block, is it possible that it cud be a bad earth...?

   And a few called me a dickhead on here because i had the same problem, and sold the Saxo as it was rather than have all the agg.......nothing worse than electrical probs, imo, any road up, good luck, and i hope you get it sorted mate.

   selling aint an option at the minute, il just have to try and get the old girl sorted. ive another alternator on the way lets hope this sorts it.
