Important! : problem after fitting 406 brembo's... thuding noise... ***SOLVED***

    Hey guys.

took on the task of fitting my 406 brembos to my 206 gti today, god what a mare!!

all was good untill after 20 miles of driving i went onto the motorway and all of a sudden this loud thuding from the drivers side, like a on off on off on off.. kind of like when you run a stick along a fence railings...

shit me up with the speed i was doing..

the thuding goes away when i brake aswell..

now im thinking maybe a pad has come loose but not sure how this could happen tbh..

the caliper itself is bolted on tight and the pads wer a very tight fit! took ages to get them in!! put the metal rods though the pads etc and all was ok before this...

so im abit stuck, anyone else had this??

    thanks guys.

I haven`t had this & don`t shoot me down in flames but have you got enough clearance behind the wheels for those calipers mate?

    wheel bolts all tight?

+1 would I be right in my theory that I posted?

+1 on checking wheel bolts, happened to me once I was sure i'd done them all up but obviously not!

check steves idea too, also check wheel bolts aren't too long. though with most cases of rubbing i'd have thought any problems would have been evident from word go.

    hey hey,

    thanks for your replys.

the wheels bolts were the first thing i checked! both wheels are fully tightend including the locking nuts.

im using 20mm hubcentric spacers (bolt to hub type) and the wheel clears the caliper easily so no rubbing.

i posted this on the 206 club aswell and have just replied to them, so will copy over what i wrote as ive done abit more diggin lol.

"yep the pins and metal plate wer put on correctly, with the pins running through the holes on the pads.

im running 20mm hubcentric spacers so no clearence issues with my nimrods, atleast half an inch gap between caliper and wheel.

was having a little check last night with the wheel on, nothing is fouling anything and all is bolted on tight, the dirvers side disc was getting very hot though, splashed water onto it and it shot straight off, where as the passenger side just sat on the disc, so thought again maybe the pad is rubbing, stuck piston maybe... done that again today though and the disc was fine, not hot at all. so unsure on that now.

as for the thuding/knocking noise, ive found out a few points:

1- it seems to go away under acceleration
2- comes back when you let off the throttle
3- is alot worse when turning right
4- seems to go away/get alot quieter when turning left
5- goes away completely when braking, even when turning right.

so now im thinking some part of the suspension could be knocking as i did have a slight knock when going over bumps but nothing when turning, but maybe with the spacers on its put abit more stress on it?

oh and only the drivers side is squeeling.

going to jack her up tomorow and take the caliper off and investigate abit further.

one problem i has was getting the outside pad in on the drivers side, the little plates of metal where the edges of the pad sit, held in my toxr screws seemed to be stopping it, but i wacked it in in the end, i was thinking maybe the piston has pushed it passed this and it wont go back...

either way ill investigate a sticky piston tomorow and if all is well and the noise still there ill check suspension.

oh and just to clarify the brakes are working fine so to speak and stop the car with ease.

    confused.com tbh"

    even more confused now tbh!!

    It sure is mate

and here is what the problem was:

took the drivers side wheel off, all was fine, wheel, spacer, caliper, disc and pads all 110% ok.

Moved onto the passenger side now that was a different story!

the wheel was tight yes, but the spacer which bolts to the hub.... 3 of the 4 bolts had come loose and wer easily turned by hand

checked everything over still as i did with the other side and all was fine bar this spacer.

checked the bolts holding it on, not threaded or crossed etc so purely my error

got my mam to sit in the car and hold the brakes on and got out my 2 foot breaker bar and tightend them up properly, not over tight but enough!! see at first id just used a socket wrench and obv the disc spun when they got tight so just stopped the disc with my foot and nipped them tight. not this time though lol done the drivers side to as a precaution!!

took her for a drive and all is good!

looking back though it could of been a VERY bad xmas had the wheel come off!!

well you learn from your mistakes and i have learnt this time for sure! least i didnt learn the hard and painful way!!

oh and the drivers side disc isnt geting hot anymore, maybe just the pad taking its place on the disc.

so all is 110% ok now!

Phew!! Thanks for all your help guys.
