How reliable are VTR Saxo's??

  1. #1
Hi guys , been a long time since ive been on here! Since then i've got rid of the 1.1 desire!

Recently , i have been thinking about getting a Saxo VTR.

Only question is , how relaible are they for doing motorway miles and doing around 80 miles daily? Are they good daily commuters? Am i likely to be forking out fortunes on repairs??

Thanks in advance for your help!

literally how long is a piece of string.

    reliable compared to what?

it's always a risk buying a car? but touch wood i've not had too many problems with mine.

I racked up around 30k in my old VTR over 18 months with no major issues.

Just like a girl, treat her good she will reward you, treat her bad and your fcked lol

To be fair I would'nt really choose a saxo for the motorway they are great to drive and all that but I hate motorway driving in mine it just sounds like the engine does'nt like it much to me lol.

i commute in my vtr 5 days a week, about 300miles per week on motorway and town. I service it regularly and replace things when they wear. Never had any major issues, have done 40k in it since ive owned it and have only replaced servicable items such as a driveshaft, clutch, pads etc...
id say theyre pretty reliable if looked after

Pretty reliable if looked after never had any real problems with mine or anybody i know other than usual service repairs or mistakes made by them, also never seen one broken down at side of motorway yet compard to numerous 'executive saloons'

Okay, take to identical vtrs, let's say they were fresh from the showroom, vtr A is run in properly, fastidiously serviced with quality parts and always driven properly.

Then vtr B, is thrashed to death as soon as it leaves the showroom, misses lots of servicing, and is generally uncared for.

Now both these cars have covered let's say 60k miles, both look the same condition wise except vtr B has more scratches, has cheap worn tires etc.

Vtr A, will be more reliable giving less trouble. And vtr B, will let you down.
This goes for any car. It all depeds on how well its been looked after.
At the end of the day you just can't tell how reliable any car will be.
You can generally have a look round a car and get the feel from driving it as to how well its been looked after.

If its wandering all over and clunking over every bump, engine rattling and rough interior wise you can usually tell if its been neglected.
Just get a good one really and continue to look after it properly and reap the rewards.

true but take my vts. 2 previous owners, both women. full comprehensive history, 60k on the clock. nothing but trouble. lol. Every ABS sensor has gone in the last year, exhaust fell off, brakes binding, oil leaks, airbag lights, leaky waterpump, clunking suspension, tapping noises, worn seat ratchets. etc etc. some cars are lemons from the get go. Friday afternoon specials.

Yeah fair point, mind you I'm not being sexist here but a car driven by a woman (and this is just my opinion and experience) tend to be run into the ground, it usually goes like this,
Car goes in for service, dealer does the oil service and says "this, this and this need doing" woman then says "it drives alright, how much is it going to be" usually followed by "ill leave it then"

And if they don't bother getting it serviced they just keep driving till it breaks, my Mrs is the perfect example of this. I used her car the other day and found loads wrong with it. She didn't even notice there was anything wrong. Idont know what she does to it but she's not easy on it at all!

i completely agree. I'm usually put off when buying a car from a woman. Generally, most women i know don't care for there cars or if they do, they are just very uneducated about it. They think its ok to hit curbs, park into hedges, park close to vans & 4x4, get the trusty romanians to wash it and tcut it, use drive through car washes, not understand the importance of services or checking fluid levels or taking the car to the garage if a management light or unknown noise starts to whine...

    Get a saxo 1.5d sorted.

There is no way to predict how reliable a car is going to be.

You could have a car which has been looked after really well and have nothing but issues and equally you could buy a car which is been ragged to death and have no problems at all.

Luck of the draw when buying cars.

My car is 76k, FSH and seems to have been looked after well according to the paperwork........I now need a new engine because it's tapping and oil is getting into two of the cylinders. I was even sensible and looked for a low mileage, clean example with a mature owner and full service history....didn't do me much good lol

I'd hate to sit in a saxo for 80 miles a day.

the vtr will be fairly economical, but rattles, is loud in the cabin and just not that nice to cruise in...

sexist barstools!!! Although you are describing my girlfriend perfectly.
saxos and 106's are not very reliable in general but it does seem to be very minor things that go wrong all the time so very cheap to fix. Also not the most comfortable cars to drive on long journeys.
If you want a cheap very very reliable car get on old suzuki swift they simply do not brake. My girlfriend has owned one for 10 years and done 110k. she has not looked after it at all never checks oil or water levels and has crashed it atleast 8 time (only small bumps) and Not one thing has ever gone wrong with it.changed the exhaust after 100k and thats it. On the other hand it is horrible to drive and I mean horrible.
If you want a reliable motorway car that is nice to drive I would get an old Honda civic.
If you want a great fun handling car get a saxo/106.

if I were you and your doing an 80 mile commute I'd opt for a more mpg friendly car, diesel clio's are both economical and VERY comfy for a little car. As to their reliability I am not sure, but as has already been said, when you buy a car you roll the dice...

Not had any issues with our VTR, done trips to Cornwall and back in it, no problem (apart from a numb arse!)

Got ours on 114k, looked tired and needed work doing to it. replaced all the suspension parts, serviced the engine every 3k for the first 12 months, upgraded the brakes and she'd have been fine if I hadn't wanted to stick an induction kit and exhaust on it. It's still fine but a bit noisier now

I think personally that these cars are great! keep them serviced, shower them with some new parts every now and again and they'll reward you with trouble free, fun filled driving. That being said... A few lads in our region have bought "mint" cars and had nowt but trouble... probably didn't bribe them with shiny parts though!

i dont see why everyone say saxos are bad on motorways, i do 50 miles a day and i cant complain about it being uncomfertable
  21. #21
They aren't bad but in my opinion there are better suited cars for racking up motorway miles in, saxo's are more for being nippy and good handling. At the end of the day its personal preference no one is going to agree lol.

On a run they are a bit of a boneshaker lol! My old 406, now that was comfortable.

Likewise, when i gave mine a decent service it was like a whole new car. Then stuck a dirty backbox on it lol.

As for 80 miles in a saxo, i do and have done more! Theyre comfy if you get it right, my vtr is comfier after youve adjusted to the seat, whereas my 1.1 was comfy up until an hour in it, where the soft seats were a nightmare

i would buy a 306 turbo diesel. relaible, good locks in 3dr, good on fuel and good for 300k easy.

Most cars will be reliable if you look after them
Learn to do most servicing your self

And do it often car will last for years
