citroen zx query

i was wondering if anyone can help me with a zx problem. i know its not a saxo but a mate of mine has a 1.4 r reg zx and its cutting out on him. it can happen at any time, he says the engine will start to run lumpy then cut out. problem is he cant start it then for a good 20-30 minutes. he also said that on occasion it will suddenly shoot up to 3000 revs and sit there. blipping the throttle helps but it goes back up again.
he is talking about giving the car to a guy he knows from work for free, but if i can diagnose the problem i may be able to nab the car off him instead as this guy isnt mechanically minded.
hes sent the engine management off at a cost of 60 quid and its come back as a pass so its not that.
any thoughts would be greatly appreciated as hes taken it to a mechanic friend who is also stumped?

yeah i thought the same thing lol. it has to be either icv or a sensor. he actually bought the car from this mechanic and hes maintained it for him for the last couple of years, wont be going to him then lol.
iv also heard that the coil pack can surge and damage the ecu but it will still show as a pass on the computer, not sure how true that is tho?
would the icv stop it from starting again for 20-30 mins?
i had a crank sensor go on a mondeo i had and had the same non starting issues.

i wouldn't of thought the icv would stop it from starting, sounds to me like somethings getting too hot if it takes 30mins to restart

if the crank sensor goes you get no spark and the car wont start even after 30 mins

The crank sensor sends a signal to the coil pack enabling it to produce a spark.

i got an update on the car. although it looks like im not gonna be able to get the car off him. he tried the turn the key so many times to reset the ecu trick and said every time it cuts out and he tries this the car restarts. so thinking its a knackered ecu mabey?

When a coil pack becomes worn out they often fail when the engine is warm mate, then if you allow it cool down it`ll start up again.

its only taken four months but i have managed to get this car off the guy who had it off my mate. started it and it started hunting for an idle. then conked out. restarted it with some pressure on the gas pedal and it drove home sweet as a nut. so now iv got my hands on it i can replace the icv and coil pack and take it from there.
