newbie with a problem.

hello people, first of all i'm new here and was after a little advice. I brought a 52 plate saxo vts around 3 weeks ago and i must say i love the car and looks really nice! but its started making a really loud squeal from the drive belt when starting from cold but when the engine has warmed up it seems to stop. any ideas on what it could be? not long before i got the car it was cammed and had new belt. the previous owner didnt say but the alternator looks new too. the car has only just covered 49k miles so pretty low mileage.

any help would be great, thanks in advance!

The cambelt & the drivebelt mate are 2 different things, check the tension on the drivebelt(alternator)& adjust if needed.

Have you checked the belt? Does it run true, is it tensioned correctly? Welcome by the way

a friend of mine said it could be a pulley bearing or something? if thats the problem is it a cheap or expensive job?

it will be the tension or the drive/aux/alternater belt or it old and worn, have a look at it and if its cracked and perieshed replace it as that wont help and if its too tight or not tight enough it will squeel

    hope this help matt

ok thanks i will have to give it a good check over at the weekend i just cant seem to find anything on the best way to check the tension. i was told to spray some WD40 on the belt so i have tried it and its completley stopped but was told it not stay quiet for long

right lads i have had a good look at the drive belt this morning and it doesnt seem slack at all, if anything i would say its perfect. i pulled the longest part of the belt up and i would defenitly say its right. i checked the pulleys and none of them have got any movement, but the squeal noise seems to be getting worse or could that just be down to it being colder last nice? would you guys say its worth getting a new belt now and see if it solves the noise?

i also forgot o mention when i was on my way to work last night the squeal didnt stop once the engine was hot like it used to?

easy way to tell if its the belt is start it up if its squeeling spray it with water(just a mist not a lot)if it stops its your belt mate

Once you start with wd40 it will just get worse. For what they cost I'd just put another belt on it, check the pulleys while its off and make sure the ribs are not damaged.

another quick question lads before i attempt the drive belt tomorrow morning. A friend of my fathers said use a wire brush on the pulleys before i put the new belt on? he said it helps to give a better grip on the belt to stop it slipping? should i do this or not? dont sound right to me lol

If i was you i would just change them anyway... its hardly any extra work, and it would be much better for the car and for peace of mind.

yet again i'm back. I have jacked the car up and looked for the bottom bolt to slack off and noticed the tightness screw is gone that the 5mm allen key is used for? how do i work around this now?
