You got a catalytic converter? aka 'cat' on?

How much was is over by?

People say giving the car a good run before a emission test helps.. as the 'cat' works better when hot therefore lower readings.

change oil filter and put fresh oil in. same with radiator. could possibly need new lambda sensor. change fuel filter too. run some redex threw the system. use high octane fuel on day of mot retest and give it a long run before hand. as mentioned if need be change the cat

If it's Decatted then you obviously need a CAT.

If not, could be a lambda sensor that needs replacing.

depnds on what it failed on, lambda usually entails and hole/blow on the exhaust, if its a CO problem then its most likely a new cat thats needed(if it hasnt be decatted, if it has, fit a CAT onto it), and hc is fuelling, usually solved by putting a new cat on, or in certain cases over fuelling or headgasket(HG usually has to be pretty bad for it to effect exhaust emissions
