Can't find the starter motor?

  1. #1
I haven't got the most mechanical experience but I've been told changing a starter motor isn't that hard and it should be straight forward. The problem is I'm not sure if I've found it from the top or underneath. It should be on the passenger side underneath/side of the engine? I found something that looks like it but theres too many things in to the way to undo any bolts not even thinking about being able to take it out? Any help? I've searched around so much and no luck

    Cheers!

take the air box off and it down the back able to rech and take out 3 long 13mm (i think) bolts and then the two elctrical connectors. i swaped one on mine on friday not to tricky just fiddly due to the wires etc

iirc two bolts are from the gearbox side and one is on the starter side so it looks like

    <-------
    <-------
    -------->

and the starter is under the inlet mani on the gearbox.

3 13mm bolts to take it off gear box
1 8 mm bolt for ignition switch wire
1 13mm nut for main wire

dead simple once the wires have been moved

Cheers guys! But when I say I haven't got much mechanical experience I mean absolutely nothing and I'm just starting to learn what things are and where they are now. So I don't really know where the gearbox is either to be honest But there was some good stuff there so I'll hopefully be able to work it out tomorrow

Cheers, i'll try this. Will this let me do it without going under the car?

Some find it easier from underneath, some from above.

I find it easier from above! Its simple and very basic to do, literally 3 bolts and 2 nuts, but its just a bit awkward.

Just remember to disconnect the battery first, as you have a live power on the startermotor...

    Found the fucker today!

So much easier when I took out the air box, although the bolt on the right was a tricky bastard and took me literally like 20 minutes to take off. Also have got every other wrench sizes apart from one to take off one of the cables which sucks. Think I might just get a mechanic to fit the new one as it needs a good service anyway!

Cheers for the help guys, really appreciate it!!

you should service it yourself mate! its really easy i did it first time without help and without any guide on how to do it and it was a nice feeling to do it myself. and if your not comfortable then buy a haynes manual

or if you cant afford one, then ask on here for some help. im more than happy to scan some of my haynes manual for anyone on here!

I second a basic service is easy enough to do. I didnt know jack all abou cars before I got this one. I went to uni and couldnt afford to take it to the garage and so did it myself. Get a haynes, have a look and ask on here for advice if you need anything. I did just that and everyone is really helpful and friendly. One word of advice though, get a trolley jack and axle stand set. Don't try going underneath the car with just the spare wheel jack, its called a suicide jack for a reason!
