Dodgy starting and ruff idle

  1. #1
Iv recently had my headgasket and cambelt changed but since getting the car back it is struggling to start first time then idles at real low revs. Feels like the engine is going to stall but it doesnt. However when driving it feels fine, but when you stop it will idle ok for about a minute then start idling like its going to stall again.

It is booked back into the garage tomorrow for them to sort out but I was just wondering what it could be?

Also to get it started I usually have to put my foot on the accelerator a little. Feels like missing if I hold the revs up a little. If that made any sense lol

Sounds like idle control valve is on its way out. This is exactly what mine was like a while ago, i replace the icv with a second hand one from the scrappies and it solved the problem.

Its starting to do it again now though about 4 months later, so i might aswell buy a brand new icv this time lol.

Just strange that it's only started doing it since I got the car back on Friday. Didn't drive it at all over the weekend and it's still like it. Might just be my bad luck that something else has gone lol

Is the icv easily changed and cheap or?

Erm its a bit of a pain to get to tbh, have to take various bit off the throttle body to get to the screws. Its quite cheap, i bought one second hand from a scrappy for a tenna, but i think now its on the way out again im going to buy a new one for like £30-40 i think they are.

Would it be the butterfly valve by any chance?

It was a pin or something, goes in and out. It was getting stuck in which was messing the fueling up, but was only sticking some of the time. I will find out the name when it goes back up for a new throttle body.
