Metal on Metal Grinding.

  1. #1
    Hello guys,

The other day I travelled to my friends all A'ok! Then on my way back I noticed a horrible metallic grinding sound from my rear right wheel, whenever I came to a halt, I thought initially it were my pads had worn and are now scouring my discs, (Its a mk2 VTR) but I checked my last years service and my garage had renewed all my pads, so they can't be worn already surely after 8000 miles? I use engine braking often and i rarely use my foot brake unless necessary to prevent these problems!!

But I noticed it also does it when pulling off aswell so are my brakes sticking or something? Anyone shed some light on my next plan of action?

    Thank you!

handbrake could have stuck and worn the pad down. tbh my rear pads wore down funny as well :-/

Could have got a stone wedged in between the disc & pad.

calipe could be binding. or more likely the pad is siezed in the carier cause they haddn't cleand it up properly. but saying that could just be due to alot of rust on the carier.

pull off the wheel and have a look, should be obvious if theres metal to metal!

might be worth changing the pads.

Noticed only one of the 4 pads is the culprit and is literally destroyed and has left nice grooves in my disc. The other 3 have loads of meat left atleast 4mm while the one on the drivers side rear had gone entirely, they were all changed last year so how come one has worn so fast?

Could be a possibility! I just wish I were more mechanically inclined to know Ithese things. What would help it lubricate, some copper grease?

    Thanks.

If its the piston in the caliper there's not much you can do unless you take the piston out, clean/lubricate and replace the seals. It would be easier getting a second hand caliper

Hmm I'll bear that in mind, thanks for your information!

Get a second hand caliper, can be had for £10-£15.

One of the caliper pistons got stuck in my old car, I realised it after getting home and finding my front disk was glowing red!!

    4mm pad ???
And you had them changed 8K miles ago??

Are you sure your handbrake cables aren't too tight , meaning that you have been going around with your handbrake tensioned???

Hopefully I'll find out the true culprit tomorrow, I've got some new pads and discs to go on, so will check the condition of the caliper then.

Something like that, was a very rough guess. why is something wrong with that? lol, if the handbrake is too tight would it affect both sides or just the one? Because as it stands only one on the rear is completely gone, the other is fine!

correct, same happened to my old vtr,, exact same symptoms and it was the pad that had seized inside the carrier

New pads have fixed the issue, I think the piston was slightly stiff, have also sorted this. Thanks for your help guys.
