Track/Race insurance?

Hi peeps,

Had a quick look through and I don't think the issue has been covered in this section.

What i'd like to know is:

What options are available for insuring a car that will mostly be used for trackdays other than conventional insurance company's?

For example:

I have received quotes of around £2k for my VTS to be a road legal car. I have no No-Claims due to driving company cars for the past 6 years or more. I would like to find the cheapest way to insure my car so I don't need to either Buy a trailer and tow car (which will need insuring also) OR renting a transporter every time I fancy a blast on the track! Are their companies that insure vehicles like this, even if it means getting it MSA logbooked and doing the odd test day or sprint day... Might be some extra fun come to think about it!

Any ideas chaps?

Buying a trailor sounds like the cheapest option to me (as long as you have a car that can tow it + saxo //weights).

As its not throwing money away, you can always sell it at a later date.

IMO, its cheaper to insure the car than run a trailer.

Id personally would look at what it would cost to insure your track car for sub 4000miles with someone like Im with now, (Markerstudy) then look at the true cost of a trailer including all of the costs you mentioned+ the fact you will probably have to take a trailer test.

Thats my opinion for what its worth!

I've got an old licence so a trailer would only cost me the price of the trailer and a tow bar kit. Unfortunately the new works car towbar costs £250!!

Downside is, I can't find a trailer for less then £600. Plus, trailering means i can't take it out for a spin when its nice etc. I'll have a look for that company and see what they quote.

I dont think that a Megane would be able to tow tbh....Renaults are usually pants for towing limits.

Id look at hiring a trailer if you went down that route...think we hired one for Anglesey once for about £35 all in!

Just had a look and the meganes total train weight is 3125kg anc the all up weigth?? Is 1825kg. So does that mean I can pull 1300kg's with it? So say the saxo is standard weight at 920kg's the trailer can weight up to 380kg's.

Sorry just working that out so i csn get my head around it lol. I guess if I can get a cheap trailer i only pay the once unlike paying insurance every year!

What Megane is it and Ill have a look now.

Your max tow weight is sometimes lower than the Max Train weight -minus the kerbweight of the car.

It a 61 plate Megane sport tourer.

It's an estate but I think they started to call them sports tourers cos it sounds nicer!

I had a look in the manual and it doesn't really say precisely what you can tow it gives an equation and a list of how to read the plate with the weights etc on it.

try companies that specialise like 'competition car insurance'.

That is a link I used to use when I sold Caravans.

Most seem to have a towing capacity of 1300kg and depending on how experienced at towing you are, they recommend that you tow a total weight of approx 85% of the total kerbweight of the car, however, that is not a legal requirement.

Even if you towed at 1300kgs, your car @900kgs only gives you 400kg trailer...

I suspect you would struggle to get one at that weight.

Lol, cheers Kam, just sent them a request. See what they say

I'll have a look pete. Going to need to trailer it to the rr day either way and then might need to trailer for a bit until we've moved house and got settled, then I can save up for the trailer etc.

One of the lads at work rallies and he's been allowed to put a tow bar on his van so I should be fine too.

Just need to find one less than £200!!!
