Important! : Car only goes into 3rd/4th. Gear stick slack

  1. #1
    Hello

Out driving tonight and went to select 5th and wouldn't go in, gear stick felt really slack. Tried to select gears and would only go into 3rd and 4th so managed to limp home.

Fiddled about on the drive and managed to get 1st I think but now the stick is stuck to the left, albeit still wobbly as fuck.

    Any ideas

    Cheers

Clutch has failed, maybe a gear linkage has failed or popped off, or gearbox has died..

Clutch has only covered 200 miles and the gears I can select go in fine so it's not the clutch.

From what I can see the linkages are on ok but will double check in the light tomorrow.

linkage popped off at a guess, clutch was a new valeo last week, and aside from which, clutch failure wouldn't make the stick go floppy!

sounds like youve popped a linkage off or the gearbox has shat itself

    all it can be mate

Ah yes my bad i forgot you got a new clutch from mandy my bad...

Hoping it is just a linkage, will get it on some stands in the morning.

Really don't have the money for a new box right now lol.

I saw another thread about a selector pin or something?

Selector pin , gives the right - left movement for gear selection.
Can't remember if you have to get the box back out to change it thought

The linkage which controls left and right movement of the stick is connected to a bar which then pops over a round bit which is sticking out of the gearbox.

This had popped off so put it back but the gear stick is still really slack and I can pop this bar back off easily.

Should it have a bolt going through?

    Cheers

    sounds worn out mate.
    does it look like this??

maybe smaller or bigger but the same style

Nah it's like a metal bar which the linkage hooks onto and the other end of that bar hooks over like a round bit on the back of the gearbox.

It looks like it has a pin/bolt going through it which I have stuck through but side to side movement is still slack.

Will update witha pic when I get on the laptop

    Cherrs

It's meant to come out.. Well allow's side to side movements, and the linkage's stop it falling out.

Obviously get's more worn over time..

Also, alot of people say the plastic bit what connects to bottom of stick is usually at fault.

    Ill find the thread mate..

mine does exactly the same i lose 1st 2nd 5th reverse and its because mt gear linkage pops off

3/4 way down this page mate.. shows the gear-stick diagram, number 6 will most likely be very worn.

the little rubber bushes perish in the linkages so then they just fall off another citreon idea to try us

Cheers for all the replies so far.

It's not the linkages, they are all on fine.

There is one linkage which controls the side to side movement of the gear stick and this connects to a metal bar with a hole at the other end.

This hole then slots over a round bit sticking out of the gearbox.

I popped it back on but the stick was still wobbly so I stuck a bolt through it and put a nut on the end (guessing it had one and it rattled off) and now it goes into all gears.

The stick is still a little more wobly than before but the car is driveable at least

theres a roll pin meant to go through the hole, nut and bolt will be ok short term but in time the bolt will wear so best to get a new pin. long extension through the wheel arch to drift it in works best for me, you're lucky it fell out, they are usually a real twat to drift out!

Ahhh I will call Citroen on Monday to order a new one, the entire gear stick has always wobbled a bit so tempted to get it all replaced at some point. Theres a thread about it somewhere
