'Bad boy' tailgate?

  1. #1
Hi there, I'm currently in the process of smoothing my tailgate and i am considering welding extensions on to give it the 'bad boy' look. But i am unsure on how to go about doing this..Can anyone give me some guidance? I have seen a few pictures on here that people have done, is there a guide? Any help will be much appreciated!

    dont quote me but ...
make the extensions with steel or other metal (old panels)lol
    clean both parts ..
    weld on
    clean both parts again
    filer or fiberglass
    smooth with wet ant dry
    clean again
    primer spray clear coat ??

Thanks for the reply mate, I wasn't sure whether to weld them edge to edge or on top of the boot metal and smooth it in? (if that makes sense) Also it would need a rolled edge wouldn't it? i dont know how to go about doing that?

it depends i would have thought ..

personaly i would edge to edge...decent weld on the inside..fiberglass or filler the outside after to get the smooth finish??

Not how I would do it at all tbh. i would go to the local fabricators and get them to fold a 7mm lip on the edge of a piece of 20gauge steel.

Then you can cut this to shape and use this as the patch for the "bad boy" eyelids. you will need to weld then using stitches on the outside so you don't warp the panels then all that will be needed is to grind off the excess weld and a light skim of filler. All the welding will need to be done with the lights in place so you know the boot lid ill clear them when in place. I normally tape a piece of card to the light to give some clearance.

Fuck using fibreglass on something that gets as much abuse as a boot lid all that slamming the fibreglass wont last long.
