Is it as bad as i'm thinking.....

Car has been ok until the last few days, havent really noticed it loosing coolant, however it has gone a manky brown sludgy colour (probs oil in the coolant). There is nothing under the oil cap, oil looks as oil should after 5k miles.

However it has now started to get alot hotter than it has previously. Was only reaching 1/4 when driving normally, around town and motorway. Until the last few days where it has been sat on half way, heats up really quick (within 5 mins of driving) get heat out of the heaters too.

If i just sit still and try and get it to warm up....takes forever and doesn't go above half way, so the fan won't kick in.

I have bled the radiator what seems to be about 5 times now.

Is it the head gasket as i fear?

I'm a bit confused, the car is reaching it's normal operating temp (Half way), it's getting there nice and quickly and you're getting heat from the heaters.

    What's the issue?

Every saxo i've been in, when warm.. indicates just under half..

And the fan only comes on after half way..

However, I recently changed engine bla bla bla, And the temp sat on a quarter.. but sent my rev's up and down..

So i unplugged it, and it now sit's at half as they all normally do.

So faulty temp sensor? Although the brown coolant would suggest head gasket!

As above half way is where its supposed to be.

Theres doesnt sound anything wrong with your car.

Brown coolant just suggests needs new coolant to me.

    Maybe a flush out.

Was about to say, it could do with a coolant flush but brown coolant isn't normally a bad sign. It sounds like you've cured the problem by bleeding the system properly.

since i fitted a VTS rad its always sat on 1/4 temp though. Red light randomly comes on when it goes towards half way. Yeah the brown sludge is making me think HG, just concerned as its not as it has been for the past 3 years

Change the temp sensor dude.. with mine unplugged the gauge reads normal IE under half way, but the red light always on.

With it plugged in, it read's a quarter.. So i'd say a faulty sensor.

    The unplugged blue one.

your should be around there too. - right hand side of engine.. near water pipes.

Sounds like oil and water has mixed to me from a bad head gasket - give it a thorough flush and see if the oily muck in the rad comes back

    *HG

Doesn't sound right. Have a sniff test done at a garage.

Chances are it has, sounds like its blown between a water way and an oilway. Dont drive it now, whip the head off and inspect

if you are trying that use kseal instead, its cheaper. has been known to work if there are early signs of HG failure, but if its gone then it wont be rescued

take the thermo stat out, flush the whole system, top it up with oil... and sell removing the thermostat will slow it warming up to running temp and will minimise oil leaking into water...

And then the buyer will notice it doesnt warm up properly when they test drive it? Besides thats not going to stop the oil and coolant mixing

    Note to self:

Never buy anything from this man, infact never buy anything from somebody that spells their own surname incorrectly.

^^ I bought a car that someone had done that with once. If you want to be a dick, good idea.

Just for future reference though, other tell-tale HG failure signs are white stuff in the oil cap, and white smoke coming out of the exhaust.
