Important! : Aftermarket steering wheels

Hi, I have just got hold of an OMP steering wheel and boss kit... Only to be told by a friend it will fail MOT. It comes with the bypass wire for the airbag light so thats not an issue, but he said its because the car would have left the factory with an airbag so therefore needs one for MOT purposes?

Can anyone shed any light or managed to get their cars through MOT's with it or am i just going to have to bight the bullet and change it over to the original wheel for MOT's?

    Cheers

I have an OMP corsica wheel fitted, with an OMP boss
I passed my MOT in early january with the advisory of:
Steering column modified but not inappropriately (steering wheel)
I have the airbag bypass wire connected up, so the airbag light illuminates and turns off as if the airbag is still present

Airbags aren't part of the MOT test however if any airbag error lights flash etc it will be an advisory so if you bypass the wire so no lights flash it would be an advisory. You could take the airbag ecu out then the light will never come on MOT.

So you've got nothing to worry about mate

    They are now, new rules.

Yeah I'm sure the new rules state that any car that was originally fitted with an air bag, must have one present.

If it's true, it'll really screw up the track cars. Also what about rally cars that drive from stage to stage on the road and therefore need an MOT? How the feck are they going to pass?

Gonna research this, as i just fitted an OMP wheel and boss...

and i kinda broke the airbag connector thingy the part that spins round 3 times in each direction lol

you can bypass the airbag or get your ecu read to turn them off... and the mot failures for airbag isnt in place as far as i know until march/april so get them mot's quick

mines been for mot today. got told rules are weather theres an airbag or not the light has to come on with ignition and go out after few seconds to pass

So no air bag, no light, no problem?

no u need the airbag light. to pass had to make light work
  12. #12
So it'll pass if the light works as it should, even though there's no airbag?
  13. #13
I fitted it today with the bypass fitted. I think its a bit of a stupid rule if it is to come in or has come in as its recommended for airbags to be replaced every 10 years according to the Haynes manual and as i understand Saxo's and airbags dont fair well in crashs and dont tend to open lol.

Its another way to try and stop vehicle modifying or get older cars off of the road.

If it hasnt come in yet I may well get in an early MOT so dont have to worry about it or jus fill a tesco bag full of air and stuff it down where the OMP sign and horn button is just for a laugh come MOT time lol!

    cheers

So would a 3ohm resistor work for this?

if not, whats the best option? seeing as i broke the air bag connector ring thingy

The new MOT laws were changed just before they came into force, this among a lot of others were chucked or seriously revised.

As far as I know you'll be fine so long as your light comes on with ignition then goes off. (so no black tape or bulb removal, but resistors are fine).

If you're really that worried ask your MOT tester beforehand.

If it was made with airbags fitted in the factory, then they need to be in for MOT. New laws

i brought a 1.8 ohm resistor, and it just plus in the either plus under dash or i cut the wire off the ring and used the connector with resistor soldered in the end
