Question about car servicing...

  1. #1
Ive booked my car in for a full service and they quoted me £192. But since then i have decided to change the spark plugs and pollen filter myself, how much should i expect to pay the garage now? Any help would be great!

You paying to have the oil, filter and coolant changed?

Wouldn't bother mate. Both 10 min jobs and will cost a few quid.

well they were meant to be doing everything because its due a full service so yes those aswell, but im just wondering how much money they will take off seeing as ive done spark plugs and pollen filter myself?
  4. #4
They probably have a standard charge so may not take anything off.
  5. #5
you wouldnt have saved much by doing them two yourself.

just do it all your self if you have the knowledge to change plugs sure you would be able to change the fluids.

What fluids will i need to change/top up? Brake, Coolant, PAS ???

Oil and Coolant, doubt they would replace the brake fluid or PAS unless it was completely neccessary. Either way it's only draining some liquid out, refilling and bleeding. Nothing you should struggle with.

If i do the oil myself will they still be able to fit an oil filter or is that done when changing the oil only?

Need to change the filter at the same time as the oil really otherwise the new oil will end up in the old filter....

Just do it all yourself, if you can change the oil then you can change the filter.

    All you need:

A flat surface (driveway being ideal)
    Jack
    Axle Stands
    Socket set
Oil filter removal tool (or brute force to twist the old filter off)

Or if that fails, stab it with a screwdriver and twist it round lol

Do you have garage and parts insurance? If you have let the garage do the work!

Depends on what the garage means by a full service as it varies from garage to garage mate.

Some will top up the coolant and change the oil. Then charge for a full service because most people won't know the difference.

Hence I don't go near garages!!

I could save you at least £50 on that service if you fancy an Hours drive up to me

you pay for the stamp in the book at the end of the day.
  21. #21
you've probably done the hard part lol.

our full service is atleat £140 for your car as it will have fully synthetic oil.

the coolant change is not included and tbf should be included in a full service. even auto data says it's an extra charge along with the brake fluid. PAS fluid change. gearbox oil change, and the pollen filter.

however topping up of these fluids are included in the price along with the screen wash.
however we do also give the car a really good going over check pratically everything. all brakes, suspension, steering, check for corrosion ect change the oil, oil filter, air filter. if its a diesel then we also chance the fuel filter. petrol ones are only changed upon request of the customer.

weird that they leave brake fluid out! Considering the older it gets the crappier your brakes are!

I've decided to just get an oil, oil filter and air filter change now. Along with me doing the spark plugs and pollen filter I think its a good service
