Important! : what way todo tappets

  1. #1
i have just done head gasket, head bolts, stem seals, water pump, tensioner and belt on my saxo and didnt addjust the tappets when rebuilt there where a little tappy but nothing extreme today i decided todo them and get rid of one big tap i had. all of them needed making bigger but are still very tappy i done it after i left the car to cool down for an hour or 2 is that long enough?

plus i was following haynes and it says number 1 exhaust is closest to gear box is this right? as i have had a few mate who do machanics say number 1 is closest to cam belt

would doing it backwards make them be set wrong?
  2. #2
cylinder one is closest to the flywheel yes
  3. #3
are you sure your getting them open and closed right, this is major important, if theyre noisey then shouldnt need "making bigger"
  4. #4
normally number one is at the cambelt end. i made this mistake in thinking it were only renults that were backwards.

ideally your best to set them with a stone cold engine i.e left untouched over night.

make sure your using the correct sizes for the correct valve. as it's very strange that you needed to make the gap larger as it were tapping before.

    as above
i have always found it best to do them first thing in a morning after the car has being stood a good 12 hours or more
