Temp sensor/thermostat? 2003 VTS

  1. #1
Basically the temp guage doesnt go up when im driving but when im idling/traffic it goes up to half and stays there. Fan stays on a minute after engines switched off sometimes.

Its defo not the HG as it would of went by now also the radiator water levels the same.

Could anyone link me a pic to where abouts they are? and link ot buy one?

    Chars..

Sounds like its got no thermostat, people normally take them out when they overheat. Eg: headgasket or the thermostat fails but when they do the car will get overheated.. Try replace it though. Also it wouldnt have gone by now i drove my furio around for about 6-7 months like it.

Sure it will have one tbh. I wouldnt get warm air in the heaters otherwise?

You will... It just take longer to warm up where the water is constanly flowing and car sucking in cold air.

It doesnt take long for the heaters to warm up though lol.

Looked inside the radiotor, no oil just a rusty coloured water. Looks due a change.

But if my guage only goes up when idling then it must be a sensor?

    Had similar problem mate.
Car wouldnt heat up and when in taffic would go to half way but then would start overheating, heaters still worked.
Turned out i had no thermostat in got a new one flushed system perfect now

Yeah at first i thought fuck my HG is going and i was awaiting the dreaded steam from the bonnet and odd smell through the heaters.. but nope. Parked it up, let it cool down and the water levels havent changed everything was fine.

So it has to be a sensor/thermostat and it will be changed this week.

    Cheers.

sounds like thermostat, will be sticking open most likely. just did mine had exactly the same problem, no heat on the gauge whilst driving, heated up fine standing still and always had warm air. nice easy fix and change the coolant while you at it if its horrid.

One last thing - will i need to unplug the battery to change the temp sensor and is it blue or green? and where abouts is it?

    Cheers.

IIRC, the green sensor in the back of the thermostat housing is the coolant temp sensor for the ECU. The blue one that screws into the right hand side of the head is for the coolant temp display on the dash.

You wont need to unplug the battery but ill be very suprised if the temp sensor is at fault. Do you know how to test a thermostat?

Do i change both? the guage doesnt go to half and it sits at the bottom all the time so must be that?

    Thanks.

Sounds good, thought it wouldnt be the sensor like ive seen quite a few doing the same thing just with thermostat sticking open.
