Power steering - Irregular

Hey folks, i've got some questions as for power steering.
First, I don't really now it works, and it doesn't matter that much, but on my car, it sometimes work, sometimes it doesn't.
My battery needs to be replaced cause it's pratticaly dead, I have to jumpstart the car most of the times.
Before I jump started the car the first time, driving the car was too stiff, and then it suddenly felt like a new way to drive! I figured the power steering started to work.

Does the battery power affect power steering? Thought it was something like an hydraulic system or so.

Other question is... There seems to be some kind of oil I need to change/add concerning power steering. My dad doesn't seem to know that, although he has a 1.0 saxo that doesn't have power steering, so, could be that the oil is just innapropriate? What kind of oil should I use? Where to find it? I live at portugal, should I just contact citroen?

Power steering fluid is what you need, its RED in colour. On a saxo the power steering pump is electric & fluid is pumped from the pump along a pipe. Then into the steering rack which has a ram inside it it.Your pump as with my pump would sound like its faulty & needs replacing mate.
