What do you guys think of them? Ive searched on Google and seen mixed reviews some people saying dont ever buy them and some people saying they would recommend it.
Part worn tyres?

#2the majority are imported in a container from somewhere outside of the European market, where their rules are, if the tyre sits on a wheel, its road worthy.
i wouldnt be suprised to find it with out road legal markings
ive seen part worns come in with puntures that have been attempted to be repaired in the side wall.
you pay £30 quid for a tyre thats 0.6mm over the limit, so will last you a handfull of miles, another 10-15 on that, get a brand new tyre which will last 10,000 miles.
ill stick to my pzr and ps3 thanks. -
#3i never fuck about with cheap tyres or brakes. Tyres are the ONLY thing keeping you in contact with the road. I always prefer to have as much grip as possible incase a hairy situation crops up. Toyo's can be had for like £50 a corner. Good value for money for what youre getting
-
#4You can buy decent part worns with loads of tread on for 1/3 the price of brand new. so long as it's been repaired properly (if it needs repair that is) and there's no sidewall damage, 9/10 you're alright

#5Depends, Ive bought part worn from reputable places before. I once got a pair of 195/45/15 Toyos with about 3mm left for 40 quid fitted. Couldnt really say no to that, I needed some tyres and they lasted a good while. Mostly, I asked the guy and he said most of his came from guys buying 2nd hand sets of wheels with cheaper tyres but plenty of tread, then wanting to swap to something decent.
-
#6If you can see the tyres first, go for it. I wouldn't trust buying online on part worns.
-
#7Interesting thought...
People are willing to buy second hand springs / dampers / engine parts etc, yet not tyres.
I can nderstand tyres are much less durable etc and so you want the 'best' you can get, however you rarely ever truely know how the items have been treated, or how many miles etc they've covered etc etc -
#8question then....if you wouldn't buy part worn tyres, do you automatically replace all the tyres on each and every car you buy?? after all, they are part worn too2 users thanked this post: ,

#9Part worns are not cheap shit imports, 9 times out of 10 theyre nearly new, from scrapped or damaged cars! I got one that still had the little rubber needles as it had never been used!
-
#10I used to have part worn's on my old saxo £20 a tyre was like new, lasted 12,000 miles and still had loads of life left.
-
#11why were the tyres removed in the first place?Quote:question then....if you wouldn't buy part worn tyres, do you automatically replace all the tyres on each and every car you buy?? after all, they are part worn too
if i was to buy a car, id expect it to be sold with tyres i wanted.
luckily for me, the Leon had the PZR tyres fitted the week i bought it. though ive had to put another set on within 10 months.
-
#12I had part worn yoko's all round on my saxo, £20 each and the front two lasted 5k.
-

a good question, why indeed? but you must see and fail plenty of cars that have near enough new tyres on them, i've just taken 4 near enough new pirellis off a vtr, they didn't stop the boot floor collapsing though hence why it was scrapped -
#14I would buy part worn's if I could get a pair, or all 4 of the same tyre, and they were a decent tyre. Otherwise no, and I cannot stand mismatched tyres on the same axle, bit of the ocd kicking in there I think haha.
-
#15If they were in good nick I'd buy them.
-
#16yep!Quote:Part worns are not cheap shit imports, 9 times out of 10 theyre nearly new, from scrapped or damaged cars! I got one that still had the little rubber needles as it had never been used!
I bought 4 part worns, the worst condition one had 5mm of tread left, the rest were 6mm across the tyre. (new tyres have 8mm)
all conti sport 3's which would have cost me £450 in total brand new, this lot came in at around £210.
-
#17i guess what generally puts me off, is that most 'part worns' i come across are always budget makes or tyres ive never heard off. If someone was selling some part worn good branded tyres then i may be inclined to buy
-
#18ipart warn can sometimes be a great option, i had a set of toyos i bought part warn, each had at least 6mm on them ,could still see the new paint line on the tread on 2 of them and i got the 4 for £60. cant remember exactly what they where called now but at the time searching the net the cheapest i found a single one was £80. thats what £320 for a set new.
i wouldnt buy if they where budget tyres, but at times you can get deals like this and well worth getting imo
-
#19I might just look out for a Couple that are the same, i dont like the idea of having 2 different brands on either side of the axel.
-
#20id rather buy completely bald part worn tyres than stick another fucking set of uniroyal rainsports on my car
-
#21.............
-
#23tbf, i did mean it more along the lines of country / area ect as the majority are imported from "outside europe" is thats better.
but i can see how its been taken. sorry for any offence carra. -
#24There are a few places round here that do part worns for £10-£15.
If you only have budget tyres on there anyway then go for it.
Personally I wouldn't stick cheap tyres on mine but each to their own. -
#25part worns are ok if you look for the decent named stuff generally get a few good bargains I've only found a handful of reliable places on ebay for that
-
#26100%.Quote:You can buy decent part worns with loads of tread on for 1/3 the price of brand new. so long as it's been repaired properly (if it needs repair that is) and there's no sidewall damage, 9/10 you're alright

Not all part worn tyres are imported.
Also dont know why people are saying part worn tyres are cheapo tyres, the big name brands also wear down you know?
And and and, what about people selling their part worn R888's and track tyres?
Ive often bought part worn tyres.
Saying you wouldn't own a part worn tyre is like saying you wouldn't drive on you tyres thats only half worn...and I take it most of you wear your tyres right down to the legal limit? -
#28i wear my tyres down to 2mm, then replace. that 0.4mm can potentially add upto 40 meters on your braking distance.
my concern with part worns, you dont know its history, could have been through its heat cycle, could have buldges that you wernt aware of or other impact damage that isnt noticeable untill its too late.
if it has uneven wear, camber/castor/toe then, it will effect how it performs on your car and will continue to wear like wank.
tyres arnt that expensive enough in the first place to warrent buying 2nd hands though imo. -
#29I have used part worn tyres on most of my car's when i was short on money. I think most people have the misconception that "part worn" means nearly fucked. Where as we get loads of cars in work that come in for the tyres changing to Pirelli from Michelin just because the owner "likes them better" with nothing wrong with the tyre we just sell them on. I do see where Tont's is coming from though but unless your going over 70 for long durations then i would say that part worn's would be fine but any high speeds for long durations I would always suggest new tyres.
I would never have a re-mould tyre though I never trusted them. -
#30You've probably bought 2nd hand car parts though dude?Quote:i wear my tyres down to 2mm, then replace. that 0.4mm can potentially add upto 40 meters on your braking distance.

people buy suspension components second hand all the time, without knowing how they've been used / treated / miles covered etc. what about things like gearboxes? loads of people buy them second hand with "a careful owner"... It's like anything, if you're a sensible buyer, you'll be fine
As I say earlier, I got 4 conti sport3's all with 6mm (well, one with 5mm tread) no uneven shoulder wear, no damage, no sidewall problems and no punctures with a saving of over £240.
thats not skimping, thats just being sensible lol, for the sake of 2mm less, i get a lot of extra pennies in my pocket and get one of the best tyres on the road, for less than budgets would have cost me.
bought a tyre for my spare wheel too, another contri 3, 5mm tread for £30. considering the current spare was bald, and needed replacing and the wheel will probably never go on the car i didn't see the point in spending £115 on a single tyre.
Good pont RE track tyres, I see loads of them sold with 1mm or less tread. obv they can't be used on the road but theyre still fine for blasting around a track at speeds / conditions you wouldn't see on the road, and they're being put through higher levels of endurance / cornering / braking etc.Quote:100%.

People just assume part worn means damaged. -
#31So if you got your tyres heated from driving hard, even if they have 4mm left you would replace them?Quote:i wear my tyres down to 2mm, then replace. that 0.4mm can potentially add upto 40 meters on your braking distance.

Bulges would show up when fitted, but tyres with bulges wouldn't be sold unless you get them from a dodgy place. Same would apply to a new tyre with any defects.
You have the choice of what tyre you buy too, you aint forced to buy a certain part worn tyre, so if its unevenly worn you wouldn't buy it!
Tyres aint expensive in the first place, but x 4 and save £100 that could be spent elsewhere. Or if selling the car or on temporary wheels then they can be handy.
Just dont see any negatives with part worns tbh. -
#32I know where your coming from with this but most people I know who have track tyres simply put up with them due to cost. Most people cant afford a new set of r888's ect...so put up with the fact they might not be as good as a new set. There is also a greater margin of error on tracks than on the road with gravel traps and run off's this gives people more confidence to run tyres with less usable tread.Quote:Good pont RE track tyres, I see loads of them sold with 1mm or less tread. obv they can't be used on the road but theyre still fine for blasting around a track at speeds / conditions you wouldn't see on the road, and they're being put through higher levels of endurance / cornering / braking etc.

#33Oh yeah, totally agree with that.Quote:I know where your coming from with this but most people I know who have track tyres simply put up with them due to cost. A mate bought a brand new set before we went to Germany, 1 week later he'd worn them all down, and thats when we were getting them at about £70 per corner! so, £280 in a week gone, plus having to buy a new set when he got home.
my point is simply that a set of track tyres with just a few mm of tread left will have probably had a much harder life than any road tyre, and if they can still stand up to the test of a track day, thats proof part worns aren't a bad thing.
plus, another point to add to the thread, I had one of the very first sets toyo R1R's in the country, used them for about 200 - 400 miles, with no real hard driving, and had enough of the 50mm profile scraping if I had people in the car, and so sold them. they were 'part worns' but clearly nothing wrong, they were virtually brand new -
#37Maybe your driving is at question?Quote:ive tried them bang on the right pressure, slightly over, slightly under. whatever i do it feels like the car isnt even connected to the tyres. id rather have budgets than these again
Never had these tyres. But I've never heard a bad word about them -
#39pissing myself at some replies in here!!! part worn's are fecking tyres, they normally come from breakers/scrappy's or insurance writes off's!!
if they are a good tyres they will be fine provided they havent been repaired poorly,
i just bought 2 for the diesel, bought a set of vtr rims for £40, 2 tyres have 6mm+ one near bald and one with 3-4mm
i buy 2 part worns £40 fitted, both with 6mm tread, decent continentals
and have a spare with a few mm on
£80 for a set of rims with 6mm treads
-
#40Any best place to buy part worns off the internet? I'm guessing ebay?
also how much to get them fitted? -
#41Part worns are fine imo.
Its luck of the draw you may get a minter of a tyre or one thats sat for years and gone hard.. -
#42Well guys got some part worn's today. 2 Of the exact same tyres, Dunlop, pretty much looked new and for £60!
-
#43Have to be carfull when buying used tyres but usually are ok.
-
#44The ones that i got today looked really good!
-
#45i've just bought two for my front still 5mm+ on £50 - makes are not fantasic but they'll do the job, i mean i dont hammer corners, aslong as they keep me legal im not really too fussed aslong as they dont have damages.
-
#46ive never bought part worns, and hopefully never will have to, an hour or 2 on the internet can bring back imense value for money tyres that arent expensive at all, and ive seen a 'pair' of part worns that someone had on there car that were 2 different tread patterns... wouldnt touch them at all... who knows they might have hit a kerb and damaged the steel banding in the side wall, inflate it and not notice it to start with and then one day BOOM as it splits and slashes the side wall... im sure some can be good... dont fancey taking a chance with the things that keep me stuck to the black bit...
-
#47Where does everyone get their part-worns from? Looking for somewhere that's pretty genuine I guess, and a bit suspicious of the Ebay ones
-
#49Did you pick it up or have it delivered?
-
#50had loads delivered from eBay.
companies use it to trade, find one with a high amount of sales and high positive feed back - just like you would any other purchase from eBay. -
#51Id only buy them for a car I was selling, purely so it had legal tyres on it. I just get Yoko s drives cheap through work
