Excess Gearbox Play

  1. #1
Hi, Been driving along today and have noticed a lot more play in my gearstick, popped the bonnet and had the stick wiggled and I've notice that when the highlighted red part moves left and right it also moves up and down, should it do this?

    Cheers,

    Dave.

Yes it should move in all the directions you said lol.

I understand it should move left and right, but as it does it raises up and down and appears to be the reason for the slight knock it makes, to me it just doesn't seem like it needs to move up and down...

What is that part called btw?

The play is usually caused by the selector underneath what you circled. Try a new roll pin.

Select reverse and it should go down and to the one side It deffo is supposed to move though.

See the other bar thats below the one thats circled does that have any play in it, if so the roll pin may have gone.

This sounds better...as that part is something like 36p

Will it be ok to drive? Or is the pin likely to come out/snap?

Well how much play is there in it? my old box had a fair bit of play to a point was hard to select first and reverse took ages to get it into gear, But should be fine would of thought.

First is ok, but it does take a little shove to get it in, reverse isn't too bad, but I have been double clutching more to get it in.

See with the snow etc, and working tomorrow night and for the next 4 nights, I don't really have the time to fix it until Friday, just hoping it'll make the next 300 miles over this week

    You wont need them

Think like every Saxo gearbox has play in that bar, When i switched my box took me a while to find one that didn't have play in it lol.

I already have play in it, mainly I think it's from the ball and "hole" joint further back, but that's a £50 part for a bit of rubber attached to a bar! The linkages are sound as they were brand new around 4 months ago when the clutch was done. It does sound very much like the split pin.

I would change the pin first see if that sorts it, They are pretty cheap tbh.

Yeah it's easy enough, couple of extension bars with a 5mm hex drive will punch it out and then punch it back in...and if there is any in and out play, a drilled out M12 thickish washer on the back will "cure" that problem (had a little search)

Jolly good best to get clued up Can sometimes be a pain to get the old one out though.
