temp gauge problem

   i have a 2002 saxo 1.1 with 62500 on the clock and i noticed today that the temp gauge went mental went from 1/3 to 3/4 and red light came on and fans kicked in then the light went out and the gauge went bk down i had just done a 35 mile drive home
   
   does any one have any ideas what could be
   or had the same fault

   Possible air lock in the cooling system,or leak/lack of water,worst case scenario would be the head gasket mate.

   Drove the car this morning and got 4 miles down the road and the gauge went mental again and red light came on and fans kicked in
   But after a further 3 miles for rest my journey total 30 the temp gauge was fine just sat below half way
   I'm thinking it's the temp switch
