    Alright guys

Got a problem with a Diesel motor that ISN'T a Saxo.
Is it alright to see if anyone here has ideas?

I've done extensive google-ing and not coming up with much

    OK

this is an old escort van (1991 i think), 1.8 non turbo, not mine but the old mans work van

I am pretty sure it's electrical

anyway. It ran out of fuel and obviously stopped. Got the thing working again after some faffing about, he drove it to work and back then the next day, nothing.

It won't turn the engine or even try to start.
If you get in the van and look at say, the little dash board clock it's bold and visible - but if you make a turn of the key it dims, turn again and it's barely visible, then if you turn the key as if you was starting the van, everything is totally dead except the usual parking brake light etc.
Same thing happens if you get in and turn the interior light on, the clock dims etc as if it's getting no electrics

It's not the battery, I've tried a known good battery (from our rover 200 vi) and the existing battery has been on a multi-meter and checks out fine.

I've looked over all the wiring under the bonnet as best I can and there do not appear to be any shorts or shitty connections etc

Don't rule out the battery, it still could be. It could be fine on multi meter but if you put a battery drop tester on it, it could say its fucked. Plus I'm sure diesels have a more amperage battery than petrols, but don't hold me to that lol. Try putting the battery on charge, or getting a brand new one.

Sounds like one of the terminals on the starter motor has broken off after it's been cranked and cranked and cranked to get the diesel back through.

most prob burnt starter out after cranking so much to get deisel thru, if not its an earth, make sure termianls tight on starter ect and if you could get a second hand starter cheap, ide swap it to see if it make a diff

Ok guys cheers. I'll have another look over all the wiring after work. To be honest I think it needs to go and live in the scrappy and get a new van, the thing is a bag of shit
