Oil Filter

  1. #1
Hi, my oil filter on my 1.4 westcoast is stuck. I tried the oil filter removal tool and it wont budge... So I'm going to try the screw driver method, can this cause any damage to the block or make it any worse?

    Thanks in advance

Personally would try said screwdriver....if it doesn't come off with it your pretty much knackered.

What type of filter removal tool you using? a strap, vice grip or the one where you put the ratched in the end? Either of the latter 2 will get it off, your just gonna have to make sure its tight as hell before trying to turn it. Also make sure the filter is clean and not full of shit before trying

tried a bit of good old wd40? never tried the screwdriver method never needed to. just more brute force and a good strap removal tool.

Thats the one there, it periced the oil filter so I ended up covered in oil

I'm going to soak it in WD40 and leave it over night and get a decent strap removal tool tomorrow, any you could recommend?

    thanks guys

Yeah I've got one but it seems a bit small for the oil filter?

Yeah can't really get a good grip on them with the chain, ideally you want one of these:

    or these

Top one probs best for saxo as its easy to get at. You no got a big pair of vice grips you can get on it? Your just gonna have to keep going at it with the chain set till it comes loose lol, unless you can get hold of either or the above.

22mm thats no where near big enough lol, its more along the lines of 32mm but even then I think thats too small. 22mm might work for the MK2 filter cap

how do you not get a good grip with a chain wrench? i have always used them and it has never lets me down! but if your stuggling just wedge a screwdriver in it, itll be reet as long as you dont do it right against the block end

Bottom ones will defo work, top ones probs would but I don't know whether they will open wide enough and you be able to actually grip the filter with one hand on the grips. (You would have to take the new filter with you to check). Get the second set though, you won't have any problems with that. Bloody expensive mind from Halfrauds!

nah all MK2 are like that with the paper element, MK1 have the old style metal filter.

Yeah go to any other local car shop and see what they got, just make sure its got some sort of grip on the 3 legs and not a flat surface.

I got a grip but it just ends up spinning and pierced the filter, I'm going to get another tool before trying the screw driver

haha not the easiest of things when you have a broken hand
  19. #19
bash a screwdriver through it and knock it loose with a hammer
  20. #20
Chain wrenches are crap and just dent the filter without getting a decent grip.

A massive set of grips will do it if you can find a set.

bashing a screw driver through will just tear it. it works if its not that tight, but if its really tight it will only make it worse
