Clunking noise?

  1. #1
Hi, over the past few days i have noticed a clunking noise coming from the front left side (nearside) of the car. Does anyone know what this could be?

    Thank you

Could be wishbone bolts, or lower engine mount.

Thanks for the reply. Are these costly jobs if it is any of these problems?

Anti-roll bar links and balljoints are definately the most common, can make a nasty clunk even when not too far gone! Balljoints are easy to check, just get the car off the ground and find yourself a suitable pry bar, now carefully but with decent pressure lever between the balljoint arm and hub, even the slightest noticable movement is enough to know that the balljoints bad. Anti-roll bar links can be a little more tricky, if they are far gone you will be able to determine this by gripping the rods firmly and waggling them in different directions, however if they are only slightly worn, it will be difficult to immitate this movement by hand and often the only way to tell if they are gone is to remove them, which often requires chopping them out. Other things to look at are the mounting bolts for the lower arm, the nuts that hold these in place have a tendancy to work loose sometimes, check to see if they have nylock nuts fitted. There are other more uncommon faults, but these are by far your best bet.
