My fuel economy has gone completely what can i look as i dropped very suddenly. This is very vague but what can go wrong to cause the MPG to drop suddenly? thanks guys

  3. #3
nope, the engine feels like it did before, its just eating through the fuel :/
its a 1l - no mods. completely standard, no sub.

already read several times. LOL. One of the best guides, if not the best on here!
yeah, im gonna service it as soon as i get some spare money no leaks, no smell of petrol. enough oil. clean(ish) air filter.

mostly do motorway miles (80mph) then (50mph) fucking m1 roadworks D:

any help additional help would be perfect !

Can you give us an indication of how bad the mpg has got? And how recently? Really the only thing we can suggest is, service it and maybe try 70 mph instead of 80 mph. What engine are you rolling?

Oh and if I ever meet the cretin who thought 20 miles of continuous roadworks was sensible thing I'll stab them. I don't mind been in 20 miles of roadworks (well I do) but when it says at the start 'Roadworks - 4 miles' then 4 miles later is says 'Roadworks - 11 miles', that actually boils my piss.

A service will almost certainly help. Air filter, fuel filter, oil and oil filter, new plugs. If you do it yourself, can be pretty cheap, and the cost of the parts needed will be offset against the money you'll save on petrol.

You could also look into using some Redex, which will clean the fuel system and injectors. There are other injector cleaning fluids out there, so have a look around.

Also try doing between 60 and 70 on the motorway, in top gear.

Right my MPG has basically cut by about a third! it happened rather suddenly too, about a week ago. I have parked it outside and I am going to check for leeks on the entire car in about an hour as i have just parked it up

I just shoved some redex in the tank too, I'm going to service it in 4 weeks as i will have some spare money then! i may even get the fuel filter done in the next week, as i did not change that last time i serviced the car, do you need to clap the fuel lines when you do this or would there not be much fuel lost?

the roadworks suck. 15 miles of 50mph and then as soon as 1 car breaks down the motorway grinds to a half due to the lack of hard shoulder!

my engine is a 1.0l... the only thing wrong with it at the moment is it has a tapping noise. so im guessing the tappets need adjusting? but I have no idea how to do that. Im sure there is a guide somewhere

I noticed earlier, when i revved the car up to about 2500 rpm and let go of the accelerator pedal there was a popping sound ... i dunno if this has anything to do with the bad MPG...

I am thinking that maybe I'm over fueling? i suppose when i check the spark plugs I will find out...

Thanks for your help so far

Thanks for the reply and no, the fan cuts in when needed and is not on all the time

  15. #15
nope. fully standard. i parked the car in a new spot on the drive that has no dirt on, so im gonna go check for leaks now

mines is on constantly, but i think its just the way its wired up. its connected straight to the earth so that it goes on as soon as the ignition is on. could this somehow still affect the thermostat, therefore affecting the fuel economy?

With two threads we might get an answer! Im wondering, my engine is rather loud and taps quite a lot... im wondering if the tappets are causing a bad MPG...

if its short journeys around town then 30-35mpg is about average for the car at this time of year. i use mine daily for short trips round town and i have a 1.1, find i get about 35mpg due to cold starts etc, but on the motorway get about 60mpg with careful driving woohoo ;D
