8v oil temperatures

  1. #1
Any one know, in degrees, what average tempatures an 8v's oil sits at?
Figures at idle when warm, normal driving and under hard use would be great so figures from your cars would be good

im not 100% sure gandi, but mine would sit around 70-85 degrees when nice and warm iirc. atleast thats what my cheapish gauge read

soon as my cars back on the road ill get some more temp readings. im a temp freak to be fair

Cheers mate, I just want to test my gauge and see if its getting it near enough right.

when cruising saving mpg im sure it dropped to about 75 but i do run an oil cooler.

in traffic would be around 80-85.

mines a cheap ebay gauge but it does the job.

Are you using the sensor that came with it or the standard sump mounted item? I'm using the standard one and a vdo gauge as fitted to an MGF

im using the sensor that came with the gauge as i had a spare take off point on my oil cooler system.

90-100c is target oil temp --125-130cc absolute max .lower temps mean you use more fuel --so if oil cooler is running it at 75c --I am guessing it has no thermostat fitted or water stat is not correct
sludge in rocker cover is caused by too low an oil temp --water content of atmosphere is not evaporated out if oil tem and or engine temp are too low
every gallon of petrol you burn 1 gallon of water is passed through engine from the air it eats --also catch tanks open to atmosphere also cause sludge build up ,as when engine stops and it cools down cold air is drawn in to engine ,then the moiosture condenses on inside of engine --thats the reason for the funny valve on std air filter /cam box pipe --partila pressure valve to stop cold air being drawn back into engine

nope i dont run a stat and i wouldnt really like to. i know over cooled is bad for your engine but so is unfiltered oil. when fitting a thermostat it stops the oil from going through the remote filter and oil cooler which i dont like. bit of swarf or small stone etc... i just dont like the idea. id like to put my oil filter before the thermostat but that would probably be alot of messing around. something i should look into though. the turbo also decreases the time for my oil to warm up which i guess is why it doesnt take much longer to reach 85 sitting on my drive than when it was n/a

boosting around, my temp will be around 95-105 degrees but i run a 16 row oil cooler so cruising and its anything between 75-85 plus its right behind my front mount intercooler. i could do with a smaller cooler in all fairness, it works well in the hot weather but maybe a 10 row would be better with shorter pipes.

my car should be back on the road this coming week. i shall remember to get some accurate figures up.

    good info john thanks
