Central locking wont work! Still no help? (thread number 3)

Surely someone will know? Im baffled and have no idea what Ive done.

Re-wiring my 6x9's in a few days ago i wired them up the the wire used by the rear speakers instead of using an amp. So i took the amp out and the LIVE wire touched the EARTH wire.

Now, when i turn the key in the drivers door which iniciates the Central Locking a fuse blows. Each time I change the fuse under the dash (a 20amp iirc) and then activate the central locking again it blows again causing interior lights to go off, my cd player and speakers to go off, and ofc the central locking which means i cant lock the drivers door.

Have no idea what to do?

Where are the central locking wires in the back quaters and what do they look like? Im pretty sure I have used the speaker wires and not central locking wires to wire up the speakers. (i hope i havent been daft)

the wires might be all good at the back of the car but might not be at the front

Everything was fine until i sparked the two wires together OR chaning the speakers?

Both happened at the same time..

Trace them back, it does sound like you may of shorted them, melted the screen. Did you disconnect the speakers and check again?

I done one side, lass had to go to uni so she took the car. Car was perfectly ok til she came back and i done the otherside and shorted it out.

Where was your amp located? in the boot? Did you leave any wires behind when you removed the amp? Have you tried disconnecting the stereo head unit?
  12. #12
ok i'll do that next. Do you know where it all connects to and I'll trace it from there..

The amp was in the boot.

All of the wires are still where I left them. Is this a massive issue?

FYI i taped up the end of the live wire to prevent further sparking..

The head unit will just have a large plug on the back.
Just unplug it and try. How did you power the amp? did it have a remote wire for powering it down when you turned the ignition off?

Take the amp wires out. Could be the +ve screen melted. At least trace it back to where you wired it all in.

Yes, it goes off when ignition was turned off.

I'll unplug when I finish work tomorrow and see what the crack is.

    Thanks mate.

If it makes this any better the rear speaker I was changing at the time of the shortage is nowhere near as loud as it was?
  19. #19
Pop that speaker out, maybe the speaker wires are touching the body behind the panel.
Last time i had that rear panel off it was a pretty snug fit iirc.

Saying that, you have a mk2, mines a mk 1.

I was thinking about this earlier today. Have you checked the central locking controller under the dash to make sure you haven't pulled something out when messing with the stereo? It's under the left dash, a long grey box bith a brown plug.

If you look directly up while led on your back in the passenger footwell it's right in front of you at the top. lol.
