Non impact sockets on an impact gun?

  1. #1
Just wondered if its too risky ?

Got a hub nut to crack and its 32mm got everything up to 30mm! But got a high quality socket set with the 32mm in it. I know they say the chrome ones are more *brittle* but have read mixed reviews on it.

Is it worth trying or should i just get one. Its 10 quid alone for the one 32mm socket!

    upto really but......

    Warning

Although non-impact sockets might fit onto air/impact ratchets, they are dangerous to use that way. Non-impact sockets are fabricated from brittle metals that could fracture or shatter, with the pieces becoming projectiles, under the torque created by air ratchets

    Very true mate.

Suppose my eyes are worth 10 quid instead of socket parts stuck in them lol

been using a 17, 19 and 21mm non impact on an air gun for 7 years now no problem.

i have buggered up a few sockets on air guns though, never seen one shatter, normally just round out either end, or split the socket down one edge

I use non impact sockets with air guns every day and never had any bother lol you have to put a hell of a lot of torque through them to break them

can you not just use a breaker bar with your normal socket to save risking it?

Yes i could but i done one about a year past ago using a breaker bar and it was a bastard to shift. Took ages for the hub nut to finally go.

This impact gun should crack it easier (Hopefully)

This is all ive ever managed to do
Impact socket being used by hand though (24" bar)

When it comes to hubnuts i rarely use an impact gun but if i do i use a normal soket and not had any issues with them

    I've done it without problem.

You sure that's an impact socket? Looks like a normal chromed socket

looks like one of those spangly coloured wheel bolt sockets that crack to me, had a set of them and they were gash

It certainly doesn't look black that's for sure

Not fat enough for a impact.

Id say its a sealey socket, they do sets in random colours so sizes are easily identified.

Just use breakers bar with scaffold pole on it always works for me

I used a non-impact socket in the Halfords Advanced toolset with a windy gun and it was fine.

ive had splinters in my face from non impact sockets after using them on guns.
    so yeah it can happen.

although, ive used many before and never had any issues.
do it, and wear goggles...or get a socket.

Theres a saying use the correct tool for the job,get an impact socket they`re designed for the extra force.
