Big End Bearings?

  1. #1
    Hi guys, so I bought a 1.1 First X-reg (2000) a month ago.
Got it diagnosed and was misfiring in 3 cylinders -.-
Put new sparks in and pretty much fixed the problem, EM light turned off.

Anyway, 4 days ago I was driving to work on the motorway going about 80 - 90 then suddenly I lost a bit of power, as in I had my foot to the floor and was only doing 60 (no I wasn't going up a hill) then suddenly I hear this noise which sounds like a really fast and loud rattling noise, at the same time, my oil light comes on. So I wearily get to work and start parking and the car cuts out and won't start...

I call the RAC and they charge me £20 for 2 litres of oil then the guy goes, I think its your big end bearings mate. Fuck.

I bought the car for £500.
    Is it the Big end?

    Cheers

Does it start now? What does it do got a video?

Yeah it starts now absolutely fine, most times it starts up there is the rattling noise, but on idle it sounds absolutely fine. I can also drive it in low revs without the noise.
I will get a video in a minute.

    Cheers for your help

I am just on way back from shop, I will get a video asap.

    Cheers mate

So there was no oil in it basically if they had to add 2 litres? Sounds like you've spun a bearing or at the very least scored them. Get a video up though

fucking hell, thats a lovely noise. good bye engine. teach you to check your oil more often (saying that i han't checked mine in months untill i serviced it lol)

yeh you've fried the bearings due to lack of oil. i bet they'll be down to the copper coating, to be making that sort of racket.
sorce new engine. mate i'm afrid

Where do you live mate? Also u wouldn't stand that close to the engine while revving it, I had same problem with my fiesta last power, towed home, revvd it and a con rod came out the front of the engine lol

    I live near southampton.
What do people suggest I do?
There isn't any point getting a new engine, it will cost more than the car is worth...
    Strip for parts?

    Cheers

if you are able to do the work yourself you can pick up a 1.1 engine for next to nothing these days, worth doing in my opinion as you will get more back for the car that way than breaking
