how to tighten steering rack and what to look for

might sound like a silly request but any one know of an idiots guide of how to check and resolve play in steering rack????

any sensible answers on how/what to check would be greatly appriciated

basically i thought it was track rod ends but someone suggested something may just be loose, when driving the front end seems to wander alot also there is uneven wear on the tyres, had tracking checked and all ok. was gonna check for play in steering rack but wanted to know persifics as to where to check.
had ball joints, wishbones and drop links done.
is there an idiots guide anywhere?

Does the steering wheel have play 12 to 6 if soo just chsnge steering Collum it's easy to do
