a hope its not,iv'e already bought it.the breakers yard man says its done 56k off a 53 plate vtr.... how long roughly to change(just to keep the cost down) cos the garage wants £250 to do it.cheers

Usually takes me about 3/3.5 hours start to finish, but i'm not exactly going flat out. That is also scrambling around on the floor on my driveway, not on a ramp in a workshop. What is included in that garage cost?

Dont want to put a downer on things but theres more than 50% chance of the second hand gearbox being just as bad or near the end of its life, im having trouble finding one that isnt already noisey, im going to be reconditioning one i think, with new bearings and sychros

Takes me around 1.5-2 hrs to remove and refit gearbox with new clutch kit aswell using a ramp at my work, its one of the easiest gearboxes you can do tbh due to no subrame etc.....

for the garage to remove old box, also remove replace clutch.new 3 part kit to go back in.put the box back in and top with oil.
if i could do it in 3.5 hrs myself and save 250 notes a will be a happy chappy

Yeah it is very simple...but it obviously takes longer to get a car safely on axle stands etc then all the time crawling around, getting back up and back down again to get tools etc. It is a LOT easier with a ramp but its easily do-able on a driveway, handy to have somebody to help though when doing it on a driveway.

Well i'd recommend you buy a valeo clutch if you're going to do it, approx £100. Then 2litres of gearbox oil would be approx £10. Have you ever changed a clutch before? I would get somebody who has to help you do it if not.

very true, last time i did a clutch on my driveway it pissed it down every time i opened my tool kit

ive never changed the clutch before, but am a quick learner.is this gearbox removal/refit a do-able job by myself?? is it just the weight thing that you need help with??

well cheers all for the help, unless i read on here that a gearbox removal/refit by myself is not a good idea, i think ive got my saturday all planned out...thanks again

you will almost certainly need help lifting the gearbox back on to the car. i couldnt work out a way to lift it high enough to slide underneath it to lift it on, it really is heavy

my plan was to use another trolley jack to get it back up into place??..hopefully this will work cos ive got a load of people at work waiting to say"i told you you couldn't do it by yourself". i like to prove people wrong.

i couldnt work out how to get it back up. couldnt get the jack under the box in the right position to lift it up. all you need is someone leaning through the engine bay to just lift it off the floor so you can slide under. its also quite difficult to line the box back up, but that is possible on your own, just

Engine crane and trolley jack might work? lift from above and keep the jack underneath aswell?
  16. #16
It is quite tricky to get it back on, which is where having 2 people helps, you want to get the car nice and high so you can get under with the box.

Trust me you'll need help to lift the box on without a crane - it keeps trying to flip round on a jack. Engine crane...well thats just childs play
