engine overheating

   came home from work, a 12mile journey and my thermostat said that the temperature was below half (normal running temp) but the overheating light was on. The fan was going wild with the car not running and the engine was boiling. Checked water, all good. head gasket is ok.
   
   what can it be? im abit puzzled.. is it a fucked thermostat?
   
   any help appreciated!

   Was the car actually over heating i.e could you hear/feel bubbling inside the top coolant hose. If the top hose is cold then it could be that the thermostat isnt opening causing the water in the head to be trapped and boil up

   alright lads, cheers for replies, so if thats the case.. just replace the thermostat? and im not to sure, as my dad checked over the water.. but engine was felt like it was gonna blow up lol and there was water in the rad. Thats why i thought it could be the thermostat going ape shit...

   Also try bleeding your cooling system.
