Spacers

Can anyone tell me what size spacers i can safley run with standard wheel bolts ?? Ive just put some VTS wheels on a tried some 10mm spacers that i had kept off my e36 and x3 bolts went in but the locking one wouldnt seem to start ?
Do i need longer bolts to run these spacers?

well 10mm spacers i would hazard a guess you would need +10mm on standard.

wheels attached to the car isn't something i would risk for the sake of a few quid on bolts !!!
