Lacquer gone wrong?

  1. #1
I've just put a coat of lacquer on my alloys and the paint has gone weird. Like a cross hatch effect in some areas as though it's lifted the paint. Has something gone terribly wrong?

    Cheers

pics would help. but it sounds like its reacted. what did u do before laquering? an what did you clean the wheels with before hand?
  3. #3
I gently sanded the primer down and I cleaned it with spirits beforehand. It has happened on all my alloys aswell as my badges and chevrons. Can't see it from a distance but it's certainly not smooth like it was without the primer :/

My Tapatalk won't let me upload anymore images on my phone...

    Kill me now -_-
  5. #5
sounds like you haven't cleaned the white spirits off properly
  6. #6
I didn't clean my badges or chevrons with spirits yet it's made that effect on everything I've sprayed. Might try build a thick coat then attempt to sand it smooth or something
  7. #7
i would leave them, they look class!
  8. #8
    that's bizarre

    Alloy

    Mirror cap

    Badge

I suppose I could say i meant to do it

time to start again, you will need to sand down and sand down the paint until its smooth as its reacted
  11. #11
Reacted with what? I don't get it

I'm assuming it's the enamel spray paint and the lacquer. I got the more expensive lacquer when I should have gotten the enamel lacquer. Costly mistake if that's what's happened...
  12. #12
lacquer has reacted with the paint/possibly with the spirits you used
  13. #13
Probably used the wrong type of lacquer for the paint.
  14. #14
can be a few things, can be the spirits you cleaned the parts with, can be the paint wasn't dried enough, wrong lacquer for the paint

  16. #16
proper panel wipe should be used and not white spirits aswell
  17. #17
Just going to put them on and write my car off.

That makes sense. Make sure your take your cyanide pills too

what undercoat did you use? that looks like the effect you get when you paint over hammerite,
atlease it's not a silicon reaction.
sounds daft but it looks like the oposite of when the paint cracks the undercoat shrinks under the layers.

dam it beat me too it. exactly what it looks like with hammerite paint.

That's exactly what I did. I painted over sanded Hammerite:

I've soaked them in laqcuer and somehow I've managed to make them look smooth. I'm not sure of its because I put so much lacquer on the paint started to run and has dried smooth but a miracle has occurred and as far as I can see nothing needs to be re-done!

With Hammerite you need to remove every last trace of it before using another kind of paint.Down to the bare metal I would have used an used an electrical drill with a wire brush. Then worked through the grades of wet/dry paper, after that i`d have used a high build primer.(thats my way)

    Artex ftw lol.

its just the solvent in the white paint you used that has re-activated the hammerite.

You should have used a isolator or a Stain block paint before you painted them white.

Only way to sort them now is strip / dip / blast and start again.

Di you leave plenty of drying time and not do it in heat ? Looks similar to a jobbie done in excessive heat....

Its the result of 2 different types of paint reacting with one another mate, hence using an isolator paint or stripping back to bare metal.
  31. #31
You've used two incompatible paints. I had this using plastic primer and halfords car paint. There will be air in the crackles so if you sand down then you'll end up with ridges in the paint. You have to sand aaaaaall the paint off and then start again with all the same paints

ah, ok I saw the orange peel effect once if you know what I mean. I thought it might have been that at first. On a second glance it looks more rough, like that fancy plaster you can do on your ceiling.

    what lacquer you use?
  35. #35
    what lacquer was it?
  36. #36
didnt think you could use normal laquer on enamel

off topic i paint a few diecast cars with enamel paint and i used normal laquer it crazed like that
  37. #37
lacquer and the paint seem to have worked against each other making it crack, check you have used the right lacquer and make sure there is nothing on them before you try again.
