coolant temp sensor?

  1. #1
is this the coolant temp sensor (on top of thermostat housing) and is this the one that will make the temp on the dials play up if its faulty?

also i think this one may be wrong as it has 3 pin connection however the plug on the loom:

has 3 holes but only 2 of them holes have pins in for connection.
is this the reason my dials are playing up? the sensor itself is wrong?
  2. #2
Yeah that's the one. With it unplugged does it not read a temperature and the coolant light is on?
  3. #3
with it plugged in on start up the needle reads half and slowly drops.
with it unplugged needle is dead and light comes on

what i dont understand though is why the sensor has 3 pins but my loom has 2 pins. i have done a conversion and the loom is from a different car. but all the plugs fit fine on all the sensors. just strange how this sensor has more pins in than the loom
  5. #5
Because not all looms use all the connections(if you get me)rather than making up loads of looms citroen made a standard loom with not all the wires/connectors used(cost efficient)

anyone any idea then what sensor i need. im guessing a blue 2 pin one? hopefully the thread will be the right size for my engine too.
anyone at all have a part number?

no idea what to do about this tbh. what sensor do i need. obv i know i need a coolant temp one. and surely its blue i need as the loom plug is blue. with it having 3 holes but only to pins in them holes do i still need a 3pin temp sensor or a 2pin?

Type in your reg at eurocarparts, then you should get the correct one mate.

no can do. engines been converted and the loom is from a different car than the engine
so looks like im going to be playing guessing games until one works

Then get yourself down the scrappy & whip some sensors off a few saxo`s mate.

thats all i can think of tbh. ahhhhh the ball ake of conversions (well this one has been lol)

could i get away with getting a 2 pin sensor that fits the block. but then snip the plug off the same car and then snip mine off, and solder/wire up that plug. as long as there 2 pin it should work shouldnt it? the loom has 2 wires running to the current plug
  13. #13
    if that made sense lol
  14. #14
not sure if relevant but on my 1.4 the sensor on the top of engine is the coolant temp sensor(green plug) but i have another below it on the back (blue plug) which operates the needle on the dash. what engine size is yours?
  15. #15
yeah i know that. its a vtr. has blue one on top and green on the side. its the top one that im having the problem with

dont engines have a code on it? maybe find it then give code to parts shop

or find a vtr breaking in your area on ebay
  17. #17
not as simple as that. the sensor on the engine has a 3 pin connection. however the loom (From a different vtr) has 3 holes in its plug so it fits but only 2 of them holes have connection pins in.

Try this it also gives some info on the types of sensor mate.

ahhhhh rite so the plugs blue no matter what. but its the collar colour of the sensor themselves that differ. hmmmm welll i went bms other day asking and the only one they had in that would fit my plug but the colour of the collar was grey and im pretty sure he said it was 2pin.
that may have solved my problem. as long as the collar fits my plug and its going to be 2pin and the tread fits into my block it should work.

can someone do me a favour if they get chance. check if there plug has only 2 wires going to it and then unplug and check if there sensor has 3 pins. please. iv found the one i had on the vtr engine when i got it and it has 3 pins also. (the one on the car at the mo in the pics is one i got from scrap yard other day) but it still plays up so im guessing its another faulty one

  24. #24

on cold start up it reads mid temp and then slowely drops down
