  1. #1
hi people my vts died after hitting a pothole. the car will turn over and you can hear it trying to start and will start for a spit second and cut out. i pushed the BIG RED BUTTON as it had tripped but still the car won't start i checked all the connections that i could see as it. happened on a country road at 11 pm and i could hardly see anything.
no idea what it could be to be honest i'm gutted as just brought tax £150 quid and what the fucking tax covers has fucked me car up

Where did you bring it from?

Also road tax doesn't pay for road maintenance

Try erasing all the faults from the ecu.My friend had the same problem after running over a pot hole and he pressed the red button as well but it didnt work.He erased all the faults the next day at a mechanic and the car started.Hope this works for you as well

That happened to me mate almost a year back. Hit a massive pothole, car died couldn't start it. Had to get my mate to come and jump it. Would bump at all. Never got down to why it stopped but kept cutting out. Turns out that my starter motor was fucked. Must have had something to do with the pothole.

either take the big plug that goes to the ecu out or just take the live off the battery for 30 mins it resets the ecu without a diagnostics

Check your earths on the gearbox its possible the jolt of hitting the pothole has dislodged the earths.

This if it's not even turning.

If its turning over but not starting try disconnecting the battery for a while to clear the ECU

as said the big red button. happened to me, hit a pot holl car cut out. checked everything but never crossed me mind being the fuel cut off switch. waited over an hour for rac just to come and go click lol.
was the hole you hit on your left wheel by any chance? cos the fuel cut of switch is mounted to the chassis right next to the strut its quite sensitive.

like said in first post i pushed the switch as it had triggered it but even after i had pushed it it still wouldn't start and just flashes up the service icon now. you can hear it go to start but then it just carries on turning over without starting

ok well reset the ecu and it still doing the same thing kinda stumped here. its definitely getting petrol as i can smell it so nothing to do with the fuel cut off switch. the car is turning over a catches for a split second but then just dies. so must be getting some sort of spark to do that. so kinda out of ideas checked the gearbox earth and seams to be fine going to take battery out and have a better look around the box and engine for any other earths i've missed. i did notice that one of the gearbox bolts was loose yesterday so going to tighten up all the gear box bolt to make sure the engine and gear box have a tight seal. but surey if it was an earthing issue the battery light would be on not service spanner?

Is the coilpack plugged in? My vts died a few weeks back after goin down a bump road, just came unplugged
  22. #22
OK well tightened the all up and made not a jot of difference. checked all the earths and made sure the parts was earthed by putting a piece of wire on the positive terminal and making sure it sparked. Reset the service spanner to see if it would disappear and it just reset the the miles but the spanner remained. only thing i can think of is that the wires feel a bit tight around the engine bay like there caught on something i thing the starter motor and maybe have snagged and broke a wire in that case its auto electrician time as i have no idea about that sort of thing. any help would be really appreciated

Check the connector on the fuel pump and check the relay under the ECU is good.

played with it loads think i'm just gonna wait till diagnostics cable arrives and get it down to the local garage for them to sort as i'm making sure that the council pay for the damage caused, fucking charge enough for 6 months tax and i don't get away with out paying that so why should they get out of paying for something they broke (my car)

i'm thinking knock sensor but would that show up on the diagnostics? as just got mine through the post today but its at home and the cars at me mrs
  39. #39
Does it run on a bit of easy start? Mine was being a bugger yesterday to get going in the damp weather - had to use to some easy start to and a bit of throttle to get it to fire up

doubt it would to be honest as its definitely something wrong as the little spanner has come up on the dash. even tho i've reset the service miles so should have tuned the spanner off. i reset the ecu. i checked all the connectors going to the sensors. i recon its either the wiring loom has a break in it somewhere or the knock sensor is to fault or coilpack. but dunno how hitting a pothole would cause those to fail? i've got the diagnostics machine but as i reset the ecu would the fault codes remain?

So mate what was causing your problem?
I'm asking because I'm having the exact same issue with my 2003 VTS after hitting a pothole and I've already tried everything mentioned here but with no success.
How did you solve your issue?
  42. #42
I hit a pothole the engine stopped 3-5 seconds later. It did turn over but it would not start at all. I guessed it probable tripped off the fuel cut switch, popped the hood, Pressed it in, thought that was it but... Turns over and starts but doesn't keep running, engine starts for half a second (it reaches 800rpm) and and cuts out.

I've seen quite a few post with this exact issue with no solution.

    Okay I had it fixed.
