Well you've said its squealing so i would say it needs tightening. 1 inch of play is too much, make sure you don't over tighten it though.

I have the exact same problem, when turning corners it squeks, and when stood still with the steering turned it does the same. Id just like to know if it is deffinatly the alternator belt, and if tightening it seemed to work. Cheers

to be safe, get a new belt - if its squeeling its been polished up - so will need replacing anyway.

they are a few quid from places like coopers, eurocarparts, part co ectect.

seams strange that it only screams when turning corners unless its because its using power to run the power stearing pump .

Sounds like a loose/slippy belt to me matey.
The reason it is doing it on corners is because that's when your power steering is working its hardest putting a big strain on your battery and alternator. This makes the alternator work harder and gives a bigger magnetic field. This makes it harder to turn and if the belt isn't tight enough it will slip or "squeal"

The best DIY method to tighten your belt is tighten it until you can just twist the belt 90 degrees in the middle.

Mk2 have a spring tensioner i do believe. support engine on jack, drop engine mount, release pressure on the belt with a bar, old belt off (remeber how it goes) new belt on, release pressure, reinstall engine mount.

i changed a alternator on a xsara but i would imagine it is the same.
