1.1 5th Gear Problem

  1. #1
    Hey everyone.

My mate has a 1.1 Saxo Forte but has suddenly had a problem with 5th gear.
All the other gears work fine but when he shifts into 5th the car won't rev any higher or gain any speed, however it can lose revs and speed. This happens at any amount of revs (as soon as he changes into 5th).

It doesn't seem to be making any noise that would suggest it's broken.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

probably doesn't have the power to keep pulling in 5th

    trololol.

no idea mate, fine in any other gear would suggest that 5th however is "broken"

Yeah. I couldn't think of anything because it does go into 5th still and keeps any previous speed you had, it just can't get anymore.
  4. #4
and what speed is it that you are trying to achieve?
  5. #5
Anything from 30-70. Whatever speed you are at when you shift into fifth is the fastest it will go.

the box is definately broken then, i guess the cheapest option would be to buy a new box rather than have it refurbished.

Do you know a rough price on that for a saxo?
I know gearboxes are usually pricey.

top out at about £100 or so it seems, best getting a 1.1 box again really to keep the same ratios.

Ok, thanks. Hopefully that'll be a last resort but it seems it might come to it soon.

Has it had some sort of extra long fifth gear added to the box? Hence the inability to pull in that gear? It should still gain speed in fifth gear however, it goes against all the principles of how the engine and box work. Got a video of it doing this?

I'll see if I can get a video.
The box is totally standard and it just started doing it. Has me stumped because if it an hold the speed it's obviously making a connection to the engine and to the axle. All I can think of is maybe an ECU/electrical problem?

an electrical problem sounds probable, maybe it has some kind of limitation on speed from the ecu ?
try going faster in 4th gear and see if when you change to fifth it holds the previous speed at least.
i would of thought if the gearbox was foobard it would make some not so nice noises

It does hold any speed when you change into fifth, if it's slow or fast.
I also thought it would make some horrible noises.
Should I try and get a fault code reader on it?
