Petroleum fill problem when over 3/4 full

  1. #1
Basically when filling up with it more than 3/4 full the petrol pump keeps cutting out and i have to fill up with trickles.
Is there a special way i should stick it in ?

This sometimes happens to me in my work van, I just take the nozzle out and put back in but not as far and it seems to do the trick, I'm guessing you are pushing the pump in as far as it will go too

thanks for the reply, i have tried pushing it in as far as it will go, taking it out turning it round anything i can think of and still just trickle trickle trickle then stop etc
As mentioned it doesn't seem to do it when under 3/4 full.
I remember the family having a Rover and you had to turn the nozzle upside down i think thats the only thing i haven't tried yet.

On one of my work vans, the only way to get the tank full is to just push the tip of the pump into the fuel tank if you get what I mean, so you can see nearly all of the nozzle but the tip is just inside

If this does work for you, just remember when it clicks, it really is full to the brim

Sometimes petrol pumps have kept cutting out on me & so if you just squeeze the lever ever so lightly rather than flat down, the fuel still comes out at the same rate but it does not cut out.
Don't think it's the problem your having but try it if it re-occurs.

I can usually get away with doing this but thinking about it I used a different garage to fill up so am hoping it was just the pumps there.

Sounds stupid, but was the garage you first filled up at on a slope?

cant imagine a forcourt being on a slope.

What you're doing is having the pump in too far it's not letting any air that's in the tank escape to be replaced by fuel, so the fuel isnt flowing into the tank quick enough and the nozzle thinks it's full.

pull it out far enough to allow the air to pass between the nozzle and the edge of your fuel pipe if that makes sense? when it clicks pull it out a bit more and try, if it clicks again pull it out a bit more etc. once you find the optimum distance of insertion you can remember it for next time. haha!

Also, your fuel gauge could be inaccurate...

Will have to experiment some more, thanks.

A lot of pumps are on a slope and its a fucking pain.

Every vehicle ive ever filled has been different, my dads trucks you have to pull it out half way and touch the top the the hole with the pump (so the fuel is shooting up)..

Most annoying ive found is my 205 to fill
