My VTR has a whirring noise coming from behind the interior fan?!

...You can hear it while driving it fast, and you can kind of hear it when still and with the bonnet up.
I took it to a guy today for his opinion and he said possibly the cambelt needs doing but he wasn't sure.
Its only started doing it in the last week or so, but generally it has felt really sluggish and slow the last 2 weeks.. running a little hotter than usual and the fan is cutting in more often...
*BEFORE YOU SAY HEAD GASKET, IT DEFINATELTY ISN'T*
My Old saxo was a heap of **** with overheating problems and i'm a bit of a hypocondriact when it comes to problems with the cooling system. This is something different.. any ideas as to what it could be?

Under the bonnet the noise seems to be coming from either the cambelt /inlet manifold area..

    Thanks a lot

Not an air leak is it pal? Could be post throttle body causing it to run lean and hot.

i dont think so.. first of all it sounded like the whirring of the powered steering it sounds like that but since it came all of a sudden i was a bit worried..

literally you hear it through the fan i thought it was something in my glovebox making the noise i'll check to make sure it isn't an air lock though!

See if theres any air "leaking" in to the inlet manifold, happened on one of my cars causing exact same symptoms
