Starter Bendix?

  1. #1
Whenever i try to start my car it will make a humming noise, but the car wont turn over. when it does turnover and sometimes if the engine is hot, its like the starter slips of the flywheel, Could this be the bendix in the motor not coming out, or slipping off? I thought it may be the flywheel or ring gear but if its cold it will turn over for ages without an issue, but as soon as its hot it will attempt to turn it over then it will slip off. And surely the flywheel or ring gear would do it all the time rather than when its hot or cold? Im guessing that a new or salvaged starter would fix this? cheers

Take the starter off check the ring gear for wear, then clean it up grease etc & re-fit it.

where is the ring gear located, on the flywheel?

and could it be this? as if it had wear in it then why would it do it only when its hot and not cold?

To be honest its not a particularly big job to swap a starter motor over, so i'd try that first, only three bolts and 2 nuts, lift it out, bit fiddly but could do it in about half hour. The ring gear is the toothed part.

The ring gear is on the starter motor, its the part that gets pushed out spins & engages with the flywheel.
